Re: laptop boots to black screen after updates

Did you figure out how to fix this problem. I'm having the same problem except on a desktop. I really would love to get this problem straightened out. Thanks.

Re: laptop boots to black screen after updates

I can't check that file because the screen is blank and ctrl-atl-F1-F6 doesn't do anything. I will see if I can get a livecd that will allow me to view these files.

Re: laptop boots to black screen after updates

Can you try CTRL+ALT+Backspace? Maybe you need to close X, to get back in console.

Re: laptop boots to black screen after updates

That doesn't work either. The screen just stays blank.

Re: laptop boots to black screen after updates

You can edit the kernel command line in grub when you start your pc and pass "init=3" at the end of it to boot into runlevel 3. That way you don't need the live cd and you should be able to have a look at your Xorg-logs.

Re: laptop boots to black screen after updates

well, im still having this problem. boot up, the nvidia screen flahses quick, and then black. thats it.

i can still ctrl+alt+f4 or whatever and get a terminal, i've tried a few different methods of reconfiguring xorg from the wiki, and im alternating between that black screen or a black screen with a flashing cursor.

i wish i hadnt played with the xorg.conf until after i tried downgrading the kernel and nvidia drivers that we updated before this started

Do you get any errors at all in your xorg log?

Re: laptop boots to black screen after updates

well, since i was messing with the xorg.conf, im not sure how helpful the log will be since i've tried everything on the wiki to try to autoconfigure it since i really dont understand how it works.

your xorg.0.log contains no errors. I would suggest starting in init=3 mode as explained above, then once logged into a console type in startx, then switch to a different console, login and then go search the xorg.0.log for EE or WW<-- if you read the first three lines of the log it explains what EE and WW stand for.

well, here is my new/current xorg.conf thats not reporting any errors in the xorg logs. and my laptop is an inspiron 9300 with a geforce 6800 go, and the monitor is good to 1440x900, there was a better screen option that did higher, i didn't get it. i did some searching to get this conf file, had a hard time finding the section for monitor specs, all the ones i found ppl had the better monitor

Re: laptop boots to black screen after updates

Hrm... Any chance you could try a live cd (ie... ubuntu/knoppix) and see if the same thing happens.  If the live cd works copy that working xorg.conf to arch and see if that helps.

Re: laptop boots to black screen after updates

i've been running my laptop off a faunos usb key since having this problem, and i tried copying the xorg.conf last night, while i was playing with it trying to get it working. i dont get motivated to do things very often, but when i do, and nothing works, i realize why i dont get motivated too much

but anyway, like i said, i tried that last night, i dont know whats going on at this point

Re: laptop boots to black screen after updates

well, i thought maybe my kde install was corrupt or something, so i tried installing gnome, and after trying to run gnome from terminal it gave me some error of not being able to initialize my display. so again, im running off faunos, and checking logs again.

the xorg log is still clean,

the daemon log shows the following from probly every time i've rebooted since i've had this problem

Nov 24 01:16:41 urmom-laptop kdm[2551]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly
Nov 24 01:16:41 urmom-laptop kdm[2551]: Unable to fire up local display :0; disabling.

its also showing in my errors log over and over

so something's killing xorg i guess?

well, here's what i did. i installed the xf86 nv driver and ran hwd, now i get my login screen, its lower resolution, but at least it works

now my problem is i can't login, well, it starts the login process, and the kde splash screen stays at the first hard drive icon, and then kicks back to the login screen

Re: laptop boots to black screen after updates

Well like I said I would give ubuntu or knoppix a shot (these are what I always run with xorg.conf issues).  Any who whats the output of "lspci | grep VGA"?  In addition, can you try this config after making a backup of your current one first?  Also can you post your rc.conf?

Re: laptop boots to black screen after updates

the config you posted doesnt work.. it brought me to the terminal like login screen, and i tried to use startx which resulted in an error about one of the last lines, depth not being valid, so i tried to comment it out and then rebooted and got a black screen with a flashing cursor

i tried pulling the config from faun os, it gets me to the log in screen where i can log in and get kicked back to the log in screen over and over again. pretty much where i was using the xf86 nv driver, which faun os uses, so it gets me partway there.

this is what i get from that command you asked me about

[guest@myfaun ~]$ lspci | grep VGA

Re: laptop boots to black screen after updates

The fact that you switch to nv driver and you get a working screen and when using nvidia driver no display is available suggest to me that nvidia module for the kernel is messed up somehow. You may have other issues as well. KDE idk anything about. But you should be able to get to a login prompt, login and use your computer w/o issue.

pacman -Qi nvidia

Could it be that your pacman database is corrupt and you don't have the most up to date packages installed?

pacman -Syy nvidia

Re: laptop boots to black screen after updates

i tried reverting to the nvidia 173 version that was in the cache, had to downgrade the kernel as well

when this problem started, the kernel was updated, and nvidia drivers were updated to 177, downgrading didn't help.

im wondering if its a hardware problem, something toasted between teh reboot?

and im using kde mod, the latest 4.1.3 i think it is?
