Re: NVIDIA Driver 180.xx Installation Help

There are pkgbuilds for nvidia-beta and nvidia-utils-beta in the AUR, you should read up on pkgbuilds and the AUR if you haven't already, they are some of the most useful things arch has to offer.

Re: NVIDIA Driver 180.xx Installation Help

This is the official NVIDIA beta driver. Some people don't like using these drivers, but I prefer these official NIVDIA drivers because the Arch nvidia driver and the AUR nvidia drivers have never worked properly with my console tty1-6 screens..... and I learned of no way to correct the problem of the white font not showing on the blank tty console screens. (making it impossible to use the console with no GUI since I am unable to view what I'm typing or what is being printed out on the tty1-6 screens.)

I've used the beta drivers with no problems, right now I'm happy with the stable 177.82 so i haven't tried the 180.08 that I linked you to.

This page has ftp links to the latest beta version: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=122606

You can use wget -c to download the driver to you ~/folder.

This is the command I used for the x86_64 version:

wget -c ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/180.08/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.08-pkg2.run

Then in root tty console you can run this:

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.08-pkg2.run

if you have the x86 version use this command:

wget -c ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/180.08/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.08-pkg1.run

Then in root tty console you can run this:

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.08-pkg1.run

Follow ncurses guide for installing. Reboot, and you should see the NVIDIA-beta splash screen if everything worked.

Thanks...

I also wanted to say that I saw some complaint threads about the 180.08: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14

This one says it has slow performance: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=123729

Dunno about the 180.08, I am using 180.06 and they are great. Read those links, and yea seems like .08 has bugs, try 180.06 instead? smile

I'm going to wait for a while to update..... my computer is working really good now, so I'm in no rush.

@ kaola_linux, if you want to find the 108.06 beta-driver that shazea said is working great, then it is on this page:

x86_64: ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/180.06/
x86: ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/180.06/

And the commands would be the same for whichever driver you choose from either of those pages.

Re: NVIDIA Driver 180.xx Installation Help

Seems to me the trouble is with Xorg-server package and deps. Just out curiosity of PV, I figured I'd try it, but haven't been brave enough to make a different Xorg (such as doing a testing Xorg, but not move my whole machine to testing), since 1.5.x in the repos needs, at the least, a newer xkeyboard-config.
