Install on a computer without CD or floppy

And the BIOS can't boot usb.

If I take the hard drive and install from a different machine, would it work?

This computer might get arch or might not.

Re: Install on a computer without CD or floppy

Provided your computer is older then a Pentium Pro then you can use PXE to boot over the network.

There is no ethernet port or modem. there is this PC card in the side that is some sort of modem thing, but it has strange ports on it.

Yes, installing Linux onto the hard drive from another computer will work (I'm assuming you don't mean another OS, but the procedure should work nonetheless).

If you do move the HD from one computer to the other, make sure you do all the configuration on the final machine. You don't want to have the OS setup for an ATI card when you've got integrated Intel graphics on this port-less machine.

Re: Install on a computer without CD or floppy

I'll either use arch or some lightweight distro.

The specs are
500MHz PentiumIII
256MB RAM

Hmm, sounds like my laptop except with more memory, and well mine has an ethernet port.
Don't suppose it's a Dell Latitude LS?

Arch works fine on my similarly-specced machines (my server is the closest, but has 320MB RAM).

Windows was made for looking at success from a distance through a wall of oversimplicity. Linux removes the wall, so you can just walk up to success and make it your own.
