awesome: some key combinations not working

I'm trying out awesome with Gnome. Just installed and using the default config copied over to ~/.config/awesome/rc.lua. Some Mod4 combinations are not working (i.e. Mod4+Shift+c to close clients), yet some work (Mod4+F1 to launch programmes), so I'm really feeling confused. Any idea why this is happening?

I've also tried other tiling wm's: xnomad, dwm, wmii. Like wmii the best, but a few minor annoyances:
1. Is there a way to get a panel notification area? Can't find out a way to use my CJK input method without it.
2. Font rendering in awesome is fuzzy, that's why I'm using it with Gnome. Other tiling wm's have the same problem, and do not seem to play well with Gnome. I enabled subpixel rendering in Gnome; how do I do the same with these wm's?

If these problems are solved, I can readily move to wmii, where keys combos seem to work.

Re: awesome: some key combinations not working

Now working. Maybe because of the new Xorg or something.
