Strange Awesome wm shortcut behavior with Xorg 7.4

I'm migrating from Gnome to tiling wm, and currently have both Gnome and awesome.
Updated to the newest Xorg in extra, and commented out all keyboard relevant lines in xorg.conf. Hotplugging enabled.

Now if I set my keyboard to us with

setxkbmap us

Awesome shortcuts would work;
but with

setxkbmap dvorak

some shortcuts no longer work, e.g., Mod4+h (decrease master width) works, but Mod4+l (increase master width) does not. Mod4+Shift+c to close window does not work either.

The curious thing is, this afternoon I was using Awesome with the dovrak layout fine. I defined my keyboard layout in xorg.conf. I couldn't get on-the-fly layout switch to work though, so I tinkered with xorg.conf for some time, until the shortcuts failed...
In retrospect, I don't need to alter xorg.conf to set the switch; I can probably bind some key combo to the setxkbmap command. But I am now really confused why dvorak does not play well with Awesome... I can type alright though.
