So, guys, i´m going to install the Arch64 in my system.
That´s my first time with Arch and 64 bits.
So, i found that the w32codecs doesnt work with 64 bits systems, but instead, people are using the w64codecs.
Does some of you used it already? It works great with Arch64?
Thanks in advance!

You do not need any wXXcodecs for over a 1.5 year now.
Everything (WMV v9 etc.) has been successfully fully reversed-engineered by mplayer.

Yes, the only file I found that mplayer don't play is real video, for it you need the w64codecs. To install get it at http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html (search for Linux AMD64 the filename is essential-amd64-20071007.tar.bz2) and uncompress it on /usr/lib/codecs

When i try to play some wma (codec 0x162 if i remember well) mplayer complains not to have the codec that shold be enabled in compiling; when i recompile mplayer i don't find this codec as a flag to activate or something like that...solutions?

If you search for it on google you find the answer. Looks like 0x162 is one of the format that need w32codecs (I think it is wma 10). (Ok, not everything works without binary codecs )

Nope. There is no wma3 support. But the 64bit fluendo codec pack has that codec.

FFmpeg isn't in a hurry to implement the WMA3 codec. This means that Mplayer and VLC aren't going to see it any time soon unless they want to compound their looming legal battles...

So in conclusion, there's no solution for x86_64 for WMA3 yet,
while x86 users can install w32codec to resolve this problem.
Is this the situation now ?

It's still not supported in FFmpeg, which means that Mplayer, VLC, Xine, and about everything else can't play it natively. I don't know if there's a w32codec or w64codec that does it. There's some pay-ware product called Fluendo Codec Pack that's supposed to be able to.

skottish:
thanks for the info, I suppose I won't be able to play WMA files on mplayer any time soon.
dunno if GStreamer is getting support on this.

Unfortunately for everyone, gstreamer also uses FFmpeg for WMA files. So does mpd. FFmpeg has been the solution for WMA for most FOSS projects for a while.
