I broke my X and I am sad

Dear reader,

I have broken my X.org. As a result I am unhappy.

Parse error on line 15 of section Files in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf "RgbPath" is not a valid keyword in this section.
(EE) Problem parsing the config file
(EE) Error parsing the config file

Fatal server error:
no screens found
xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno3): Server error.

I commented out line 15, and started X successfully, but the two times I did this there were strange results (both using Awesome WM). (1) Everything looked normal and I could run Firefox, but the terminals would spawn in the upper left corner and not resize or fit the tiling style. (2) The list of tags in the upper left hand corner was missing, I could not spawn a terminal and the wallpaper was distorted.

I wrote this because of something silly that I did. It has nothing to do with anything, anyone said here

Geez, where has the delete button gone? Can I have a 'stupid' switch please? I want to remove this post now.

I'm sorry if I attempted to create a little humor out of my frustration. My simplisitic manner of addressing this problem was just an attempt at creating humor. If that is what bothers you I am sorry I did not convey that fact in a clear manner. If the problem is simple to solve and a result of my error please enlighten me. Your comment seems to do nothing but attempt to insult me for a reason I do not understand.

edit: grammar

I have tried several different configs created by nvidia and hwd. Each time it returns the same error. I have also tried running X without an xorg.conf and I recieve the same error.

edit: Clarification

filam,

No no no! My goofy post had nothing to do with anything that you said. I didn't read all of your opening post, and I posted something that you had already said that you did. It was me who created the confusion. My apologies.

Re: I broke my X and I am sad

What version of awesome are you using?

From the error message you posted, I suppose you're using xorg-server 1.5 from [testing], right? I commented that line in my xorg.conf and I'm runnng awesome3 with no problems.

Re: I broke my X and I am sad

AFAIK, the newer version of the X has a new RGB system, making an RgbPath directive unnecessary.

The chances are that awesome is experiencing some other error because of the upgrade.

Windows was made for looking at success from a distance through a wall of oversimplicity. Linux removes the wall, so you can just walk up to success and make it your own.

Version 2.3.4, which may be the problem. I guess it is time to upgrade...

Re: I broke my X and I am sad

are you using xorg-server 1.5? if so then comment out the RgbPath line in xorg.conf

Re: I broke my X and I am sad

I had the same issue (I upgraded to the latest [testing] xorg-server and started getting the error about the RgbPath directory) but my problem seems a bit worse.

I use GNOME, and when I startx, it works, but my panels are messed up (they are too short horizontally and the bottom panel is floating about 100 pixels too high) and my touchpad no longer works (Thinkpad T400).

Any ideas? I'll post my xorg.conf in a minute.

EDIT:
Turns out I needed to also get the [testing] package xf86-input-synaptics. Got my touchpad working again, but my GNOME panels are still screwed up. hmm

EDIT AGAIN
Got my bottom panel fixed (moved it back down to the bottom of the screen and it stretches completely across) but I still can't get my top panel to be the correct width.

Re: I broke my X and I am sad

I just upgraded xorg-server from 1.4.2-2 to 1.5.3-2 today and I got the same error. I'm just wondering if this is a bug in the package and if it is, anybody experienced with bug reporting might be willing to submit it to the bug tracker. Commenting out the RgbPath line did the trick.

There are about 10 posts written today that will give you the solution: Comment out the "RgbPath" option in xorg.conf.

I had the same problem with my T400. Go into System -> Preferences -> Screen Resolutions. There may be a screen that is there that is causing the mix up in resolution. I fixed it by disabling a screen that was trying to go at a higher res than the T400 allows.

Thank you! This worked nicely.
