kernel26-2.6.27.7-1 & xorg-server-1.5.3-2 upgrade problem

Hi everyone!

Ok here is what just happened to me, I did a pacman -Syu as usual to update my system and downloaded kernel26-2.6.27.7-1 and xorg-server-1.5.3-2 as part of the update. Then I installed the 180.08-1 nvidia driver in hope that It would solve my firefox lag issue (see this post -> http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 3#p455213).

After doing all this, I started X and found out that the keyboard and mouse were not responding anymore. Everything was fine in console though. So I rebooted the system using the button and had a Kernel panic : kernel panic not syncing Fatal exception in interrupt.

I then booted with the archlinux livecd, chrooted in my disk and downgraded the kernel using the one in my cache (/var/cache/pacman/pkg/kernel26-2.6.27.6-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz). It booted fine but I still could not use my mouse and keyboard in X. I did nvidia-xconfig but it did not solve the issue. I had to downgrade xserver too by downloading xorg-server-1.4.2-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz from archlinux.umflint.edu/extra/os/i686.

Everything is now back to normal but I am a little bit in shock... Did I do something wrong during the update process? Why was the kernel and xorg-server package not working? How do I prevent this type of situations from reoccurring? Is there anyone else that had this problem or have more information about all this?

Thank you

Edit : here is more information about my system

There are many threads opened during the last 24 hours that will give you answers.

In general, you should read the latest news on http://www.archlinux.org/ and maybe even subscribe to the RSS feed.
