terminus console fonts - what do their names mean?

I always wondered their naming convention. It's something like ter-u12n.psf.gz, so I guess 'u' is the encoding, '12' is the size and 'n' is the formatting.

I've got two questions:
1. how do I know what encoding is each?
2. about the formating, I think n stands for 'normal' and b for 'bold'. What's f meaning?

I've made some searches but I couldn't find anything, maybe I'm searching for the wrong keywords.

Good question and one I've often pondered as well...from the source tarball's README:

- sizes    6x12, 8x14, 8x16, 10x20, 12x24, 14x28, 16x32
- styles    normal, bold, EGA/VGA bold

The character set covers about 120 language sets and supports ISO8859-1/2/5/
7/9/13/15/16, Paratype-PT154/PT254, KOI8-R/U/E/F, Esperanto and many IBM,
Windows and Macintosh code pages, as well as the IBM VGA, vt100 and xterm
pseudographic characters.

'F' appears to be for iso8859-15, according to /usr/share/fonts/fonts.dir which shows a complete listing of the filenames and their mappings:

ter-f12b.pcf.gz -xos4-terminus-bold-r-normal--12-120-72-72-c-60-iso8859-15
