Intel GM45 (x4500M) terrible 3d performance with intel driver and mesa

I have following problem with my Lenovo SL500 laptop. I have installed new xorg-server 1.5, mesa 7.2, libgl 7.2 and intel driver 2.4 with libdrm 2.3.1 and intel-dri 7.2 (from testing repository) and generated xorg config. Everything went fine, and Xorg.log does not report any errors. When using 2d graphics everything is smooth and fast. Problem starts when I run glxgears. Performance is terrible, I get only about 60 fps. In addition I got the following error:

[tomek@notebook ~]$ glxgears
Failed to initialize TTM buffer manager. Falling back to classic.
292 frames in 5.0 seconds = 58.241 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.001 FPS

Here is my glxinfo output

I'm puzzled because at www.phoronix.com they eneded up with good results with my video card (that is of course Intel x4500 as in topic smile )

I would be grateful if someone gave me a tip how to improve performance of my graphics card.

Here is my xorg.conf

Re: Intel GM45 (x4500M) terrible 3d performance with intel driver and mesa

Hi,

According to the composite wiki article, if you put these on xorg.conf, you can have some better performance.

        Option      "AccelMethod" "exa"
        Option      "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
        Option      "ExaNoComposite" "false"

But there is something realy wrong with the new intel driver. The performance is not so good and not so stable as the version in core. But that's why I link testing repo, it's good to live in the edge. smile

60 is your monitor refresh rate...

Re: Intel GM45 (x4500M) terrible 3d performance with intel driver and mesa

You are right. Now I feel like an idiot neutral I should have known whats going on when I saw exactly 60 fps in glxgears output. Thank you very much for your input smile

The result is different after disabling VSYNC. Still low - unfortunately - but this time more belivable.

[tomek@notebook ~]$ glxgears
Failed to initialize TTM buffer manager. Falling back to classic.
1268 frames in 5.0 seconds = 253.472 FPS
1344 frames in 5.0 seconds = 268.774 FPS
1345 frames in 5.0 seconds = 268.875 FPS

I will try to work with wiki to improve the situation smile

Re: Intel GM45 (x4500M) terrible 3d performance with intel driver and mesa

After compiling new libdrm-2.4.1 package situation improved slightly. After installation I managed to get this output from glxgears:

[tomek@notebook ~]$ glxgears
Failed to initialize TTM buffer manager. Falling back to classic.
1812 frames in 5.0 seconds = 362.367 FPS
1871 frames in 5.0 seconds = 374.101 FPS
1877 frames in 5.0 seconds = 375.342 FPS

It's still not even close to result which I had in Ubuntu (about ~570 fps). I wonder if ubuntu team patched something in the driver.:/

Re: Intel GM45 (x4500M) terrible 3d performance with intel driver and mesa

im experiencing this very same problem since the nov 30 updates to xorg 1.5.3-2

i dont know where the problem lies. ive been searching around, and there isnt a definitive answer.

what denisfalqueto suggests didnt work one bit sad

glxgears runs as much as 60fps.

seems that vsync is limiting your framerate.

Re: Intel GM45 (x4500M) terrible 3d performance with intel driver and mesa

Apparently yes,
According to the thread:

To restore to the old behaviour, put this in your ~/.drirc:

<driconf>
  <device screen="0" driver="i915">
    <application name="Default">
      <option name="vblank_mode" value="0" />
    </application>
  </device>
</driconf>

But I don't come back to the same perfs as before (tested with eternal lands).
I noticed that in my /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

(WW) intel(0): Register 0x61200 (PP_STATUS) changed from 0xc0000008 to 0xd0000009
(WW) intel(0): PP_STATUS before: on, ready, sequencing idle
(WW) intel(0): PP_STATUS after: on, ready, sequencing on
(WW) intel(0): Register 0x71024 (PIPEBSTAT) changed from 0x00020202 to 0x00020000
(WW) intel(0): PIPEBSTAT before: status: VBLANK_INT_ENABLE VSYNC_INT_STATUS VBLANK_INT_STATUS
(WW) intel(0): PIPEBSTAT after: status: VBLANK_INT_ENABLE

There seem to be some problem with mtrr
I found this problem which seems related but I only have 2GB of memory

doing the .drirc trick didnt cut if for me, i still had 60fps with glxgears.... but since besides that, i dont suffer from any performance problems... i didnt pursue the matter further...

I'm having this same problem with a x3100. I managed to get compiz working again (using the options on the Intel GMA wiki page), but 3D games are slow. Also, I can't play a movie with compiz open (complains about that it can't allocate memory).

Re: Intel GM45 (x4500M) terrible 3d performance with intel driver and mesa

I too vote for offering the old version of Xorg.  With 1.4.2, I had at least semi-decent graphics performance.  Now, when I use XAA, performance is miserable.  When I use EXA, the performance is very slightly better, but the system is still unusable, as the task bar is corrupted and Compiz Fusion still runs far more slowly than it used to.

I have a copy of Xorg 1.4.2 from the ABS lying around with hotplugging enabled; I am planning to throw that back on my system.

I checked and latest Ubuntu (on which I had decent performance) uses xorg 1.5.2. Do you remember how did X work with this release ?

I don't know about you guys, but I'm getting better performance in 3D games than in previous versions of XOrg, once I turn off vsync.

Gullible Jones: But you happen to have x4500, do you ? wink I think this problem can be intel specific.
