Arch currently has Xorg 7.3 in core. Intrepid Ubuntu says the old nvidia driver isn't compatible with the new Xorg 7.4:
Two of the older nvidia binary drivers are not available for X.Org 7.4 yet, so users of these drivers will be automatically switched to the corresponding open source drivers.
So with an old nvidia card i have to use the nv driver upon update? nouveau isn't ready. Given this situation i'll freeze my Xorg version to 7.3, so i can keep playing 3D games.

You may use nv, but it only has 2D acceleration support. So you better keep on using X.Org 7.3.

So, for all of us FX users we'll have to keep to xorg 7.3?

I'm not exactly sure which packages to freeze. Just the utils packages display a '7.3' version. xorg-server itself shows 1.4.2
local/xorg-server 1.4.2-2 (xorg)
X.Org X servers
local/xorg-server-utils 7.3-1
X.Org utilities required by xorg-server
local/xorg-utils 7.3-1
Collection of client utilities used to query the X server
For pacman.conf for now includes
IgnorePkg = xorg-server-utils xorg-server xorg-utils

I think that you may have to ignore the whole xorg group:
IgnoreGroup = xorg

Xorg freezes with xorg 7.4 and using 96xx drivers. I had to switch over to nv driver.

I just tried the nv driver and that doesn't work either.

i don't know if it's related, but i've got an up-to-date xorg installation with nvidia-96xx which runs fine (exept for desktop icons labels on Xfce's desktop when compositor is enabled) with an FX 5200. so this issue is only available for nvidia-71xx drivers.
just my 2 cents.

or simply buy a mx440 nvidia card for 5€ from ebay. that's what i did some time ago.
it's cheap and sufficient for work/watching some video, and does not consume much power.

The geforce FX is still supported by the 173.xx drivers. Only the TNT and Geforce 1 are no longer supported.

true, but be aware that 96.xx are the latest drivers to support non-SSE chips. on my old trusty kt7 with AMD Athlon 750 anything newer than 96.xx will fail to work because my CPU does not support SSE.
that's a shame.

Well, but the 96.xx does work with new xorg, too.
