Kernel Recompile Error

I receive the following error when trying to recompile the kernel 2.8.6.1:

scripts/Makefile.build:13: init/Makefile: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `init/Makefile'.  Stop.
make: *** [init] Error 2

Any ideas why this is so?
