Disk error on Inspiron 530

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 currently running a dual-boot between Vista and Ubuntu.

I tried to boot the x86_64 ftp installer, and it could not continue past a whole bunch of ata: error messages. Booting in legacy ide mode didn't help.

It isn't the exact same error, but could it be related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/153702?

I'm not sure what else would be helpful. I'll post the precise error as soon as I can find time to copy it down w/ pencil and paper.

EDIT: I have md5'ed the CD. It's fine.

Re: Disk error on Inspiron 530

Here is the gist of the error:

ata1.00: qc timeout (cmd 0x27)
ata1.00: failed to read native max settings
ata1.00: HPA support seems broken
ata1.00: soft resetting link
ata1.00: exception emask [whole bunch of hex codes] (timeout)

It alternates between soft and hard resetting the link with a bunch of hex and a (timeout) inbetween. Eventually it continues, says it cannot find the boot cd, and kernel panics.

Re: Disk error on Inspiron 530

I am getting the *exact* same problem on a Dell Inspiron 530.

I have tried disabling dma via kernel parameters at boot time, but it didn't help.  Can anyone offer any advice at all?  This machine currently has Fedora on it, and I would really like to get Arch on it.  Fedora is making me lose my mind.

Re: Disk error on Inspiron 530

I solved my problem by setting my harddisk to work in RAID mode rather than IDE... hope this helps someone.

Re: Disk error on Inspiron 530

Unfortunately, I'm dual-booting with Vista, so I can't change my disks to RAID mode without killing my Vista install.
