From the home page:
nvidia-71xx is no longer supported and has been removed from the repositories. Affected users should install xf86-video-nv or xf86-video-vesa, complaints can be sent to nvidia for not providing compatible drivers.
Can we make an official document to NVIDIA where we complaint about this decision? I'm a 96xx user, but seems that I'm in the same situation [1].

Looks like I wont be updating any time soon then. I have two GeForce MX400's in my computer, and I use the 71xx driver.

Strange. Geforce 4 should work with the 96xx drivers. 71xx are only needed for tnt and geforce 1.

I updated Xorg today (xorg-server to 1.5.3-2 etc), I have an FX5200. I uninstalled nvidia-173xx and installed nvidia beta 173.14.15
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=122423
I commented out the "RGB" line in xorg.conf and have direct rendering - all seems ok.

by any change, do you know if the fx5200 can be used with higher resolutions than 1280xXXX with the new driver?

Too many OT...
It isn't a " I have problem with Nvidia drivers > 96xx " or " I resolved my problem updating the driver to a > 100 version ( 'cause users with cards < 5000 *can't* use them ).
If your brain doesn't know what is written on home page, please read it, and if this situation doesn't disappear, open a new thread ( I hope it will be immediately closed ).
... stop OT, ok?
We know that the drivers <= 96xx have some trouble with the new X.org, because the Nvidia developers haven't upgraded such drivers to respect the change in the new Xorg release.
So, my question is: Can we organize some "official" complaint or we need to go one by one to Nvidia?

I have the same card and It's working with the driver in the repos (173.14.12-2) .
What are the advantages of the beta driver ?
English is not my native language .

I have a whole load of older machines at home with TNT2 cards in them. Am I right in thinking that if I want to run up-to-date arch I'm going to loose 3d acceleration now? Or is there a way to get 3d acceleration using an open source driver? If this is the case I will definitely join a complaint/petition to nvidia.
edit: This thread appears to be the one to watch. Why the hell don't nvidia release the specs for their older cards? What do they have to loose?

I have a feeling they'd come back with a "use the open source driver" response, but why don't all you guys with older cards that are no longer supported organize a document or something to email to them.

If you read the thread I linked to. Some people who work for nvidia replied and said they're working on it but it might not happen for a while.

What are the advantages of the beta driver ?
I had a nagging minor problem that's gone away with the new xorg and/or beta nvidia.
I'm not bothered about security between family members, only if the PC was stolen while we're out, so...
I have my home directory truecrypted. When I first power up I switch to a console to log in (my user password is one-letter, just for future screensaver locks), where my .bash_profile prompts to mount my home directory. The rest of the day I log in/out as normal from kdm.
Often when I switched back to kdm after console mounting my truecrypt volume in the morning, just moving the mouse immediately gave me an "invalid password" message. Trivial I know, but gone away now.
