DVI output from dock

Hi

I have a HP Compaq 6710b docked in a HP 2008 120W Docking Station and would like to use the DVI output on the dock.

Please note that on the page above the is the following statement:

The HP Docking Station is compatible with HP Compaq 6300, 6510, 6515, 6530b, 6535b, 6710, 6715, 6720t, 6730b, 6735b, 6910, 6930p, 7400, 8200, 8400, 8510, 8710 and 9400 series Notebook PCs and HP Compaq 4200 and 4400 series Tablet PCs.
NOTE: Some notebook models do not support the docking feature.
NOTE: DVI is not supported on the HP Compaq 6100, 6300 and 6500 series.

So even though the laptop does not it self have a DVI port it should be supported.

Some info:
- Graphics hardware: intel x3100
- Xorg driver: xf86-video-intel 2.4.3-1
- Xorg-server version: 1.5.3-2
- libxrandr: 1.2.3-1
- Bios version: F.11
- VGA bios version: 1478

Interesting bits of /var/log/Xorg.0.log (Both the VGA and DVI cables are connected, but there is only signal on the VGA cable):

(II) intel(0): Output configuration:
(II) intel(0): Pipe A is on
(II) intel(0): Display plane A is now enabled and connected to pipe A.
(II) intel(0): Pipe B is on
(II) intel(0): Display plane B is now enabled and connected to pipe B.
(II) intel(0): Output VGA is connected to pipe A
(II) intel(0): Output LVDS is connected to pipe B

(II) intel(0): Output VGA connected
(II) intel(0): Output LVDS connected
(II) intel(0): Using user preference for initial modes
(II) intel(0): Output VGA using initial mode 1920x1200
(II) intel(0): Output LVDS using initial mode 1280x800

xrandr output:

   640x480 75.0 72.8 72.8 75.0 66.7 60.0 59.9
   720x400 70.1
LVDS connected 1280x800+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 331mm x 207mm
   1280x800 60.0*+
   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.3
   640x480 59.9

USB, Audio, PS/2 and VGA is working fine on the dock, so DVI is the only thing missing.

Kind regards, enrique

Re: DVI output from dock

I have a Thinkpad + Dock with an ATI FireGL V5200 card and DVI shows up as expected. I know that with Thinkpads, only some video cards support the DVI output on the dock. In particular the ones with deticated video cards had support, while ones with integrated video didn't. I'm not sure if the new Intel X3100 video cards are supported though. It may also be worthwile to look at the output from xrandr --verbose, since it usually lists cloned outputs. However, since the xrandr didn't even detect the DVI output, I don't think that will be much help.

Re: DVI output from dock

I will try xrandr --verbose tomorrow, but I think you are right.
I'm just wondering why HP's site does not list it as not supported.

Then I have some time I will try installing the original OS that came with the laptop + the software on the CD that came with the dock, and see if it then works.

Kind regards, enrique
