trying to find a changelog for new updates is a pain in the rearend

yes...that....how do fellow archers do it?

i usually go to the front page, click on the pacakges, go upstream link, fail...

is there a simple way to pick up whats been changed in the update so that i know beforehand what will or might break? big_smile

thanks

Reading the arch-dev-mailing list helps. Nothing sits in testing for a while unless there are questions on compatibility. xorg-server and its supporting cast of programs was there for quite a while, and it was discussed continuously.

For upstream changes, if you can't find anything on the project's website, try their code repo - typically, there's a file called CHANGES or Changelog.

For Arch changes i.e. a pkgrel bump, check the SVN commit message.

Pacman has an option to show a package's changelog if it's available. Unfortunately this never seems to be the case.

Unfortunately, keeping a changelog for the packages is a big PITA for the maintainer, and very few people use such a feature.

i dont understand, why is that? just pick the changelog from upstream..i asume if you are the maintainer, the least you could do, is read whats new, right? but maybe there is more to it and im not seeing it... sad

Well, funny coincidence. I've just filled a 'bug report' reg. changelogs:

http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/12359

but most likely it'll be closed soon. I had a strange feeling that I'm the only one complaining about missing changelogs.

Re: trying to find a changelog for new updates is a pain in the rearend

The package changelogs are only supposed to reflect Arch changes, not upstream changes in the package. I agree that it's too much work finding out what changed, but no one seems to have a desire to change things.
