@Leigh: I knew somebody would use my suggestion
I think it's a simple way of enabling users to test different kernels without disturbing the official one. Users can then test in an easy way bug corrections, new kernel features, etc. I'm pretty sure many users don't want to just build the ABS kernel and install it on top of the stock one because if the kernel does not boot, its kind of a pain to reinstall the stock one over the broken one...
