ATI Drivers

I'm rather new to Arch Linux, but so far I'm really liking it. I've been using Debian and Fedora before.

My install went fine but I'm having problems getting xorg to recognize my Video Card drivers.

I'm running a ATI Radeon 9600 on Xorg. I downloaded the fglrx drivers (4.3) from ATI and unpacked the rpms (a file format I hope never to use again  tongue ) and installed locally. I also made a new xorg.conf to go along with it but it seems it can't initilize. Please help.

Here is my xorg.conf

# File: XF86Config-4

Re: ATI Drivers

there is a wiki page on ati and also other threads in the forum,
if you can sell it and get a nvidia instead,
even if you got it to work ati is lacking 20-30 % behind nvidia in opengl
good luck  big_smile

Re: ATI Drivers

I saw the Wiki page but I don't know how this PKGBUILD script works... and what to do with it. Is it some sort of build script?

I just did a ./configure && make all commands. Is this is the wrong way in Arch Linux?

It is not wrong but in the majority of cases there is no easy way to uninstall software which you've installed this way.

Just copy the PKGBUILD to some empty directory and type "makepkg", which will take care of compilation and even downloading the source. You'll get an Arch package (*.pkg.tar.gz) which you can install with "pacman -A".

Re: ATI Drivers

You can also use the precompiled packages made by link smile.

Just add this to your /etc/pacman.conf:

[link]
Server = ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/tur/link

Then do a "pacman -Sy ati-drivers-module-kernel26" and "pacman -S ati-drivers"

This will install Ati drivers version 3.12.0 for Kernel 2.6.8.1.

Re: ATI Drivers

I have the same card as Tassadar.  I installed the packages like ActionNews said with only one problem.  ati-drivers would not install, I had to force it to install.  I was given an error that libGL.so.1.2 already existed.  One thing I found is when i added the module to my /etc/rc.conf file it was not found.   I had to copy the driver from /lib/modules/2.6.8.1/video to /lib/modules/2.6.8.1/misc for it to be found by arch.  3d acceleration seems to be working.  Frozen-bubble runs beautifully, but anything that uses openGL freezes the entire system.  I will see if I can correct this.

Re: ATI Drivers

Well, Thanks for all the help guys. I really appreciate it. big_smile

I added that new repository to my pacman.conf and installed the ati-drivers and the new kernel. It went pretty smoothly and I restarted. It didn't recognize the module so I moved the file like kill said he did and that worked.

Well, the big problem is that my video/graphics are actually running slower now.  :? I used to get about 400-500 on glxgears, now I'm lucky if I break 100. But no problems running OpenGL apps though (apart from the fact that they crawl).

Re: ATI Drivers

Sounds like dri isn't being loaded.  I have the same problem when it isn't loaded.  But OpenGL apps crash when dri is loaded.  Check your xorg log and make sure it is dri gets loaded, it should be in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Your right the DRI module isn't being loaded by xorg. Um... could you tell me how I need to edit my xorg.conf to turn it on.

OK currently, this is what is loading the DRI module in my xorg.

# This loads the GLX module

Re: ATI Drivers

Originally I did get that error.  I was able to stop the error and get dri to load properly (so my x log says).  I do not remember exacly how I fixed the error I've been making changes, and gl apps no linger crash x, just themselves.  Here is my xorg.conf

# ServerLayout sections.
# **********************************************************************

# Any number of ServerLayout sections may be present. Each describes
# the way multiple screens are organised. A specific ServerLayout
# section may be specified from the X server command line with the
# "-layout" option. In the absence of this, the first section is used.
# When now ServerLayout section is present, the first Screen section
# is used alone.

Section "ServerLayout"

# The Identifier line must be present
    Identifier "Simple Layout"

# Each Screen line specifies a Screen section name, and optionally
# the relative position of other screens. The four names after
# primary screen name are the screens to the top, bottom, left and right
# of the primary screen. In this example, screen 2 is located to the
# right of screen 1.

    Screen "Screen 1"

# Each InputDevice line specifies an InputDevice section name and
# optionally some options to specify the way the device is to be
# used. Those options include "CorePointer", "CoreKeyboard" and
# "SendCoreEvents".

    InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer"
    InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard"

Re: ATI Drivers

Well, I thank you guys for your time. That last config file worked and fglrx is running as my graphic driver, but alas it isn't any faster than before and Blender is a nightmare to run. But I won't waste any more of your time on my problem .  smile  Thanks!

BTW, if I'm still new to Arch Linux should I even try to attempt this:

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=2515

Recompiling the kernel kind of scares me.

Re: ATI Drivers

Do it, if you screw up just reinstall and try again.  Its not as hard as it seems.  Also you will never learn unless you try.
