Hacking the Arch Linux installation CD ?

I was examining the ARCH 0.7 beta cd, and an idea came to my mind.

Is there a way that i could edit the options or the way the Arch Linux installer works?. I'm just curious to know how it works, (the script)... I would like to create sort of a personalized rescue cd...

Run the CD and copy /arch/setup to your HD.

Re: Hacking the Arch Linux installation CD ?

But then again, how do I integrate the modified setup file with my custom cd?...

I did some research, and apparently I have to either modify or create a new initrd.img file
I found this link:

http://www.netadmintools.com/art164.html

but I don-t know if just decompressingthe file
gzip -dc /tmp/initrd.img > /tmp/initrd.unc.img

modifying it

and compressing it again would work
gzip -c initrd.unc.img > initrd.img

I know that i could try doing it and find out if works or not, but I wanted to know if someone has tried it before, before I start messing with the file and wasting cds..   roll
