hi all
i have read a ton of pages on this issue but i cannot for the life of me figure out what to do. the problem is iwconfig reports "radio off" so i would need to have a module loaded and some configurations made but what exactly? my laptop is fujitsu siemens m7400.
maybe some kind soul could browse through these pages and give me simple instructions
here's what i found so far:
Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo wireless radio module: http://zwobbl.homelinux.net/pub/ (main site: http://rfswitch.sourceforge.net/ )
Acer Hotkey driver for Linux: http://www.cakey.de/acerhk/
Linux on an Amilo M-7400 laptop: http://tuukka.iki.fi/linux/amilo.html
thank you very much in advance!

nothing about wireless here... anything else interesting in your dmesg?
oh and btw, do you have this installed on your machine?
http://www.archlinux.org/packages/core/i686/ipw2200-fw/
/edit: further to your edit, there's something about wireless finally... ok, i had the same problem, you may have a look at this:

the script doesn't work for me (still radio off) and yes, i have ipw2200-fw installed. honestly this is too complicated for me - too many conflicting infos
Offline
what does this return?
cat /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ipw2200/*/rf_kill
/edit, easier like this.

Offline
it returns "3".
Offline
hmmm 3 is strange because it means:
3 = Both HW and SW RF kill active (radio off)
sorry but i have to ask, did you double check the switch button on your machine, is it in the right position?
once you've checked, as root, you can try:
echo 0 > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ipw2200/*/rf_kill
and see if there's any change...
Offline
after echoing "0" to it it's "2". i have been pressing the button after every try. do i need some of the stuff in my 1st post to be installed?
Offline
/edit : now i really have to read all of your links before continuing posting BS... will be back in a minute
/edit2: so, looking at http://repos.archlinux.org/viewvc.cgi/k … sion=21132 , ARCH stock kernel does include the wistron_btns module:
CONFIG_INPUT_WISTRON_BTNS=m
so, as root:
modprobe wistron_btns
http://carolina.mff.cuni.cz/~trmac/blog/wistron_btns/ for more details (i'm in edit mode, can't see if you linked this one already)

hehe, take your time - it's very much appreciated! i'm putting fsam7440 install on hold for now
Offline
oh and FTR and as i do not know how familiar you are with arch, you can had this module to your /etc/rc.conf MODULES array so you don't have to load manually each time...
Offline
many thanks! the module works and i now have the interface "unassociated". i'm going by the arch wiki page "wireless setup" and everything is OK until dhcpcd which times out waiting for carrier. scanning for acces points works. the guide only mentions WEP but i'm using WPA AES. can it have an affect here?
Offline
i'd recommend this page http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Netcfg
it's a very straight forward and efficient tool to setup wireless (WPA works great with it), it's well documented and you have some configurations templates installed with the package that you can adapt easily.
btw, could you please mark this thread as [SOLVED], thank you.
