This all started when I decided I wanted to play Oblivion.
My windows partition is full. I thought 40 gigs was enough. Apparently not...
Anyway, installed Oblivion on wine, seemed to work ok, but sound would not. I managed to get sound extremely choppy by following the wiki on http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Linux, but that wasnt really acceptable. I decided to try OSS, just to see if it would work, and it works great... Same with Counter-Strike.
The only problem is that OSS takes the soundcard, and I can't use anything with alsa at the same time (music, etc). This is a problem for me. Are there some magic settings to get alsa to play nicely in wine?

Try nice -n 17 wine GAME.exe
Also try OSS4.

+1 for oss4... support it!
He hoped and prayed that there wasn't an afterlife. Then he realized there was a contradiction involved here and merely hoped that there wasn't an afterlife.

Oss4 solved all my wine apps sound problems with alsa. It then added the side effect of all system sound being more controllable, with higher quality and volume.

Or you can just use aoss to launch the game... 'aoss wine Oblivion.exe'... done.

Actually aoss wine GAME.exe gives even worse quality than alsa...
