when i type alsamixer i get this:
function snd_ctl_open for default: No such file or directory
so downloaded alsa-driver from source, built it, and then installed it. but i still get the error.
when i do hwdetect --show-sound i get this:
ac97_bus snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm-oss snd-page-alloc snd-pcm snd-timer snd snd-pcsp snd-ac97-codec snd-intel8x0 soundcore
and my Audio device is: 82801G (ICH7 family) HD Audio Controller
am i missing something. any help would be greatly appreciated...
P.S. I've searched around hoping to get enlightened, but i didn't find any info that would solve this.:(

Did you add your user name in audio group?
# gpasswd -a USERNAME audio
There is a good wiki page for this thread on http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ALSA_Setup

i executed those commands with root privileges. i don't think there's a need for a root to be added to audio group to be able to execute 'alsamixer'. i' have read wiki already and it was my primary reference...
