extra system procs running

why is it that all of the sudden I have all these random system procs up and running - `ps aux` reports around 20-30... I have no clue what alot of them are, but there are about 10 or so for xfs and jfs....
I want these shut off if I don't need them... yeah they're not using cpu cycles or anything, but it's just irritating to see them there....

any clues?
