My resolution is low

I just installed arch. I have been setting it up. I now have nm-applet starting at boot and kdemod working. My only problem is that I can not get my resolution up. My resolution is 1024x768 (reported by system settings and xrandr) and it should be 1280x800. Here is my xorg.conf:

Well, add 1280x800 to each of these Modes lines (or get rid of them altogether).

Re: My resolution is low

Could you give any information on the graphics chipset being used? (I'm guessing it's a laptop).

Is that what you wanted?

Edit: yes it is a laptop smile

Re: My resolution is low

That's perfect. I recommend creating a (mostly) empty xorg.conf like so:

Section "ServerFlags"
        Option          "AllowEmptyInput"       "true"
EndSection

And an /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-synaptics.fdi containing:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
  <device>
    <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.touchpad">
      <match key="info.product" contains="Synaptics TouchPad">
    <merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">synaptics</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.Emulate3Buttons" type="string">no</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.LockedDrags" type="string">no</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.PalmDetect" type="string">no</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.TapButton1" type="string">1</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.SHMConfig" type="string">1</merge>
      </match>
      <match key="info.product" contains="AlpsPS/2 ALPS">
    <merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">synaptics</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.TapButton1" type="string">1</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.SHMConfig" type="string">true</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.RightEdge" type="string">960</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.LeftEdge" type="string">0</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.TopEdge" type="string">0</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.BottomEdge" type="string">780</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.VertScrollDelta" type="string">13</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.HorizScrollDelta" type="string">20</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.MaxSpeed" type="string">0.72</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.MinSpeed" type="string">0.76</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.AccelFactor" type="string">0.181</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.RBCornerButton" type="string">2</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.ClickTime" type="string">500</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.PalmDetect" type="string">off</merge>
      </match>
    </match>
  </device>
</deviceinfo>

Also, if you haven't already, install the packages xf86-video-intel, xf86-input-evdev and (assuming you're going to use the trackpad) xf86-input-synaptics. Then restart kdm and give it a shot.

Re: My resolution is low

Well, it worked. I do not know what you did, but it worked. Thank you. I'd be interested to know what you did. It would make this a nice learning experience. wink

For others reading this topic:
Right after doing what he said and restarting X, my mouse stopped working. After a restart, though, everything is working fine.

Re: My resolution is low

Ok, I am not an expert but I'll take a shot at it. You were originally using the 'vesa' driver. 'vesa' is only a basic driver and I believe does not support resolution higher than what you got. Refer to your 'Device' section in your xorg.conf to know which driver is used.

Section "Device"
        Identifier  "Card0"
        Driver      "vesa"
        VendorName  "All"
        BoardName   "All"
EndSection

And installing xf86-video-intel put that right driver and it started working for you.

Re: My resolution is low

Thank you. I was more wandering about the mostly blank xorg. As for as I knew, you had to have settings there. How does it work? Is it just the new way that xorg works? Does it automatically select the best driver?

Thank you once again. Now Arch is my main distro. Everything is working perfectly (except konqueror, but that is another post).

Re: My resolution is low

Yup, the new xorg servers have autoconfiguration turned on which, in the case of intel chipsets at least, is pretty good at figuring things out. The "AllowEmptyInput" in there is mostly a fix for an annoying bug when pressing ctrl+c.

And, because it uses the HAL daemon to grab information about input devices, the .fdi file there is just setting some device settings that would normally be in the xorg.conf.

Re: My resolution is low

Wow, the new xorg is nice. Thank you for the help and the explanation. Now I know one more thing about linux. smile Arch really is a great distro, I know the xorg thing will be in other distros to, but Arch is nice for other reasons as well.

Re: My resolution is low

I have a similar problem. I changed my 17" LCD monitor (1280x1024) with a 22" LCD monitor that can do 1680x1050.

My xorg.conf is:

Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier     "aticonfig Layout"
        Screen      0  "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Files"
EndSection

Section "Module"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
        Option      "AllowEmptyInput" "true"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier   "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
        Option      "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
        Option      "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor"
        Option      "DPMS" "true"
        HorizSync   30 - 83
        VertRefresh 56 - 75
        Option      "PreferredMode" "1680x1050"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier  "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
        Driver      "fglrx"
        BusID       "PCI:2:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0"
        Device     "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
        Monitor    "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
        DefaultDepth     24
        Option     "metamodes" "1680x1050 +0+0"
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport   0 0
                Depth     24
                Modes     "1680x1050"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

Through KDE Settings I can change the resolution up to 1680x1050 which is the optimal, but as soon as I logout or reboot it reverts back to 1280x1024.

Any hints?

Re: My resolution is low

I tried the ArchLinux specific package "hwd" on both my Toshiba A110 laptop and HP xw4100 Archrig and found it to be fairly accurate at generating an xorg.conf that actually sets the resolution to screen native, but it depends on the graphics card installed. It correctly set on Intel integrated graphics chipsets, and on VMware Workstation also. Doing 'hwd -e' will also tell you what driver package to install if it knows the graphics adapter, but I tried this with an nVidia Quadro card at work and it didn't have a clue. It correctly picked up the ATi card though and pointed me to the right driver package.

It's a bit hit and miss but as I've found often it's correct. Information on 'hwd' is located at: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg#hwd

Hope this helps!
