Problem with screen turning off

I have the following problem, after a while of inactivity, my screen blanks (backlight still on) and i can move the mouse and everyhing is back to normal.. so far so good.

But if there's a lot of inactivity (say about an hour) the screen turns completely off and no amount ok key pressing or mouse moving will turn it back on. i usually have to raise skinny elephants (http://www.brunolinux.com/01-First_Thin … hants.html) I can ssh to the computer just fine, and if i kill X and restart it the screen turns back on ttys remain blank though..

Any way i can prevent this from happening?
