[SOLVED] Problems getting terminal in GNOME.

Hi All.

So, I'm trucking through the installation guide on the Wiki, and have gotten GNOME installed and got my wifi working.  (Well, wifi working manually, I haven't looked at wicd and etc yet...)

I'm kind of at a stop right now because I can't get a terminal once logged into GNOME.

I have two issues:

I only have a shortcut for "root terminal" in my menu, and don't know any other way to get a terminal up.

If I accept that and click on "root terminal" it will accept my root password, but not actually open a terminal.  Interestingly, GNOME does seem to think everything is cool -- if I click the "root terminal" shortcut again, I get the standard gnome warning that root priveleges have been granted without confirmation.  However, at no time do I actually have a terminal window available to me.

Otherwise GNOME seems fine, aside from having nothing at all installed.  smile

I will probably have a few more questions, but I need to be able to use the command line from within GNOME to move forward, so I appreciate any help.

For context, I'm not a total noob to Linux, but this is my first time with Arch, my first time with any distro that is sort of "from the ground up" oriented, and I'm certainly not a Linux expert either.  I'm solidly "intermediate" in my experience.  :-)  From a bit of reading, I certainly do dig the philosophy behind Arch, and I'm excited to finish getting my system together.

Thanks for any help!!

Joe

Re: [SOLVED] Problems getting terminal in GNOME.

what happens when you hit ALT+F2 and type gnome-terminal? Maybe try a different terminal emulator or try re-installing gnome-terminal.
Welcome to Arch! smile

Re: [SOLVED] Problems getting terminal in GNOME.

THANKS SO MUCH!

I had tried alt-F2, but it never occurred to me that the corresponding error message actually meant that I didn't have it installed!  Sure enough, pacman -S gnome-terminal and things are good.

However, this has me concerned that I missed a meta package or other step as I was going through the procedure.  Should I have had to install that to have a terminal in GNOME?  Should my GNOME menu be so completely empty?  (I assumed yes on that second question until now.)

Thanks again!

Re: [SOLVED] Problems getting terminal in GNOME.

The gnome menu will be pretty barren unless you install the gnome-extra package.  I prefer to just install the gnome base and then install additional items one by one as I find I need them.  The gnome-extra package is pretty massive.

Edit:

How did it take so long for someone to pick "arch_nemesis" as an arch forum name?  Seems so obvious now.

Re: [SOLVED] Problems getting terminal in GNOME.

LOL it seemed like the only choice to me!!

I did figure out that I was lacking the gnome-extra package and things look a bit more populated.  Honestly I don't mind a bit of slop at this point in the game.  If I'm reinstalling a year from now maybe I'll try to keep things a bit more lean...
