not a big deal but sometimes I can not eject my dvd drive with the button on it. I can by pressing eject in kde/hal.
Anyway to make the external eject button work when the drive is being used like the kde button does?

You have to unmount the CD before ejecting it.

The late comedian Benny Hill (bless his cotton socks) once interviewed his alter ego - who was a Chinaman. As a Chinese (and no offense intended) he had great difficulties pronouncing the 'r', it usually ended up as 'l' (that's a lowercase L).
Eventually (and unavoidably) their discussion came around to politics and the interviewer Benny Hill mentioned that in the UK, they have an election more or less every 4 years. At this, the interviewed (Chinese) Benny Hill rolled on the floor laughing:
"Evely fawl yels!? In China we have an election evely molning!!"
- just my li'l contribution to misreading the title ... :-)

Kudos to OP. It takes a hell a lot of courage to talk about these kinds of things!

Ejectile dysfunction is nothing to be ashamed off. Many others have found themselves in your situation. It's ok to talk about your experiences with Hal and if you're ready to move on, I'm sure that the community will be able to help you. I just hope that you're doing it for yourself and not because of peer pressure from others to avoid Hal.
