I have been living with this problem for awhile. Generally I have just opted to use Firefox whereever possible but I didn't like the idea of not having good backup. Well, I once again searched the forums for a solution to this problem today and was unable to find even the tiny morsels that I was able to find before.
I had been through several solutions for this problem including the changing locales thing but that had no effect but to prevent me from being able to run the compiz settings control. Today I ran opera from the command line and noticed a bunch of ELF errors that looked like they were caused by something 32 bit that couldn't run. I downloaded the abs build with the intention of using that but then I discovered that I wasn't running true opera. I was running something called opera-static (as found in the /var/lib/pacman area). I uninstalled this and reinstalled the "opera" package and the problem went away.
This is just put here in case someone else has the problem. Maybe it will be helpful.
