Was anyone able to get this game working on wine 1.x?
The AppDB (link) says it works on versions 0.9.16 - 0.9.52 with ddraw patch. I tried compiling those versions of wine, it crashes with some errors (after 10 minutes of compiling ).
Does anyone have an old pkg.tar.gz saved somewhere of wine versions 0.9.16 - 0.9.52 so I can downgrade my wine and enjoy this game once again?

Try using PlayOnLinux instead of downgrading. It will let you install and run a game from an older version of wine of your choice. The game worked for me some time ago, but i dont know which version specifically I used.

Just tried to run it (I also want to play this, you just reminded me, I miss roping!) and got some sound and my screen resized but nothing else, had to pkill it from a tty.
Mmm. Will try some stuff, and monitor this thread of course.

I tried using it (there is no WA in the games list, so I used autorun from the CD and created prefix). The wine versions I used were 0.9.48 and 0.9.52. On both of them the installation starts, and then says:
There was an error starting the WORMS ARMAGEDDON installer
Please check the CD
On Wine 1.1.0 installation works fine. I don't use wine at all (except for this), so downgrade for me would be an acceptable solution for me.
P.S. Once more, does anyone have any of the wine versions 0.9.16 - 0.9.52 in their pacman cache?

Just change the pkgver in the PKGBUILD from abs and build it yourself. I just checked, the sources for 0.9.52 are still available from the download source in the PKGBUILD so this should work..
archlinux - please read this and this — twice — then ask questions.

rson, he said in his first post:
"I tried compiling those versions of wine, it crashes with some errors (after 10 minutes of compiling roll)."
I just compiled 0.9.52 from pkgbuild and uploaded it, only to realise i forgot to change the stupid source line, so it was actually 1.0. -_- If noone gets to it before me, I will redo this later.

Try wormux in communnity. It's very similar to worms.

thanks, I managed to get it working with your 0.9.38 and this ddraw patch.
Tutorial:
1. Install wine 0.9.38 from above links: pacman -U wine-0.9.38-1.pkg.tar.gz
2. Install the game by running /media/WA/Install/Install.exe (autorun installer gives an error)
3. Patch the game using wine with this patch.
4. Extract the files in wa_ddraw-0.9.38.tar.bz2 (found in above link) to the folder where you installed WA.
5. Run WA.exe, the game should work now.
The game works best at 640x480, at higher resolutions the system cursor is visible in the middle and a game is a little slower. But it's not a big deal. Btw, this should also be possible with playonlinux, but I didn't manage to install it since the only option is autorun installer and it gives an error at the start of installation.
@peets: thanks, will do.

Damn, such a hassle...since WA doesn't require 3D acceleration, you could just install it in a virtual machine and be done with it. VMware works best for games, since it can stretch the resolution when going full-screen (as opposed to VirtualBox)
That's the way I used to play Starcraft, Risk II, Heroes of Might and Magic III and some other games....
The day Microsoft makes a product that doesn't suck, is the day they make a vacuum cleaner.

But if they tell you that I've lost my mind, maybe it's not gone just a little hard to find...
