I do like it, a lot. But i think it has to grow.... although now its my primary distro and all, i wouldnt say its the best distro out there, neither that the installer its bad, i think its a greate distro, and the installer its ok, ofcourse it needs some polish up, but thats it i think... the problem with the "perfect" (or best) distro is that everybody has different needs, so i dont think there will be such title...

Anyway, like i sayd, i really like it and do it every day more.

Yeah I think its a very good distro...nice, fast and compact. Some of the voting choices could have been worded different though.

I'm thinking of installing it on my IBM TP 233mhz system also.

There is much to like about Arch and I think that it can carve a much larger niche in the crowded distro market. I compare it favorably to Slackware with swaret. Once configured, there are few differences between them. Configuration is similar but performed differently. The init system in both are simple and straighforward by design. Slack users that have an itch to scratch would do well to try Arch.

My primary concern is what will happen a few years down the road. Will Arch achieve a critical mass of committed users that will ensure its survival? With so few developers/packagers, can the effort stand the loss of a key member or two? Slack could lose Patrick tomorrow and still probably survive for another 10 years IMHO.

On the suggestion front, can Synaptic be adapted to use the pacman repositories? As the number of packages available in Arch increases, the need for a GUI tool will increase.

While the idea of throwing more developers at a problem and making it easier is a popular one, sometimes you have to be careful about that. Just because you have more bodies doesn't mean that things will be easier. We're conscious of this problem and intentionally being aware of how we grow the developers. Without a group of developers that jive well, all you get is chaos.

I like Arch's simplicity in the inits, pacman, and abs, vs my previous favorite, Gentoo, and definetly the i686 optimized binaries so I can have a new server up in minutes, without messing around with a PITA installer (ala Gentoo) or compiling for days, or living in RPMHell (ala Red Hat). I also run servers. Servers that are modern, definetly not looking for a distro that can run on my old pos. Which is why I chose Arch over Slackware.

I just hope Arch lasts for a long time and more people find it. Its a tad scary to run a distro in a mission critical environment with only 400 registered users on their bbs. But, Arch fit the bill so I'm giving it a go.

EDIT: I also like upgrades, just put the latest OpenSSH bug fix on, smooth as silk. Keep up the good work Judd & Friends!

I think it's the best distro there could be, but it needs to get bigger, so the package repositories have more packages.

other than taking an arch newb like me forever to setup the basics (network, x, sound), it's the best linux distro i've tried (that says a lot, cause i've tried like 10).

I have tried "some" Distros too, but they have always been missing something...

Then i saw my Linux mentor was trying Arch well lets give it a go, nothing missing yet and installed it on like 3-4 different comps now...

It's the best I've ever used. (this is my 3rd distro) I don't even want to try and use more distros, because I know that it will only be a disappointment.

Are you having a laugh? You are aren't you? What you can't find in the official reps, not much in my experience, you can either find in the TURs, a PKGBUILD on the forum or floating about in incoming - that register is ace. Failing all those you can build it yourself and if you can;t you have no-one to blame but yourself

If i had to find a fault in Arch it would be to say that it takes too long for new ideas to be implemented but that would be scraping the barrel

Probably not very well, considering that forum.gentoo.org doesn't exist. (It's 'forums.gentoo.org')

That said, I love Arch, and I'm almost never happy with any kind of software, so this is a quite rare occurance, mostly owing to the fact the Arch is typically exactly what I expect it to be, a Linux distro with the coolest pkg manager ever.

Well, I havent tryied out so many distros before this and it´s perfect for me. Hell I even named my pc after it, its called ....archelina. Dont u dare laugh. Anyway, im so faun of it so me and my working pal are probably goin to set up some pc with AL at work after some perfermance tests of course. However our goal is to replace our development environment from UNIX to something more cheaper. Anyway, I will send you some feedback how the performance test went later on...say after x-max, maybe earlier .

To all of you guys working with this distro, you doing a GREAT work, keep it up and dont let the bugs scare you.

This being my third distro, I'd have to say I like it quite a bit. Although I wouldn't call it the best one out there. Each distro has it's own niche...the only question is "What niche do you fall into?"

I have my primary server running SuSE 9.1 which I enjoy, but there's too much "fluff" with it. Its nice that the installer is easy to use and whatnot, but I want to control *all* the packages I install. That's where Arch comes in. I'm not new to linux, but I like the idea that I have more control over what is installed and what isn't.

Also, I'm moving all my server services (http, ftp etc...) off of the SuSE box onto my Arch box and making it (arch) my gateway/firewall as well.

It's the best Linux Distro I've ever had. I'm a BSD guy but I have to admit BSD for desktop sucks. So I needed a desktop to play games, jukebox, whatever. Mandrake and FC3 were out of the question. I had a Gentoo box and I REALLY liked it. But I didn't have time for the installer. I like to do Stage one. I then tried Ubuntu. Great but I'm not really a beginner. Arch was the best. I like how it tells you EXACTLY what's going in,and how big the packages are. Pacman is great. Oh yea and those timers when you do Pacman in Console, beautiful....
