Question about CRUX...

Are the core, opt, and contrib packages available as, you know, packages as well as ports? Or do all updates have to be compiled from source? Thus far I haven't been able to find any package repositories, but the docs talk about something called "pkg-get"...

(Asking this because CRUX just had a major release, and is looking like a good Arch alternative at the moment.)

Why don't you ask them?

Because I don't think they have a forum.

Re: Question about CRUX...

Got it in one... They don't have a forum, and IIRC Arch was based mainly on CRUX, so I figured there'd be some ex-CRUXers hanging around here.

Re: Question about CRUX...

The install CD has pre-compiled packages, covering most essentials (including xorg, not sure about gnome/KDE).  You can download the iso, mount it, and look for the .pkg.tar.gz files.
Other than that, everything is source based.

Yup, I was going to answer that, but Colin beat me to it. You can build a functional Openbox desktop without compiling anything, but after that you'll need to roll up your sleeves. wink

Doesn't somebody keep a repository somewhere of compiled packages online? I seem to remember that somewhere, but don't know if it's true or not.

Re: Question about CRUX...

If you need packages you wont like CRUX. Try Slackware instead or a diritive distribution (although none is as good as slack itself of course) you might need wider package selection.
eg. GoblinX, Vectorlinux.

I would describe CRUX as an Archlinux when you started using it, without pacman. More or less..
The pkg-get you are reffering to is actually prt-get.

Although i havent used CRUX myself that much, i try to keep an eye to its development. All ive seen is ports. I dont think CRUX users like precompiled packages.

There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)

Re: Question about CRUX...

There is also pkg-get and pkgsync besides prt-get but there are no remote package repos for them. They are intended for use in a local network.

CRUX is only binary for the purposes of installation -- after that it basically becomes a source distro.
