ext4dev --> ext4

When kernel 2.6.28 comes out will transfer from ext4dev to ext4 be possible. I doubt it, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Re: ext4dev --> ext4

They are the same thing just a different name, all it will require is changing ext4dev to ext4 in fstab.

Edit: and the module of course wink

Re: ext4dev --> ext4

I thought so. But the thing that is confusing me is the usage of mkfs.ext4dev  tool. I know that this is the same thing as mkfs.ext4 but will the new recognize fs made with mkfs.ext4dev as ext4 fs?

Re: ext4dev --> ext4

I've recently switched from 2.6.27.7-arch to 2.6.28-rc7. All partitions were ext4dev.
Transition went without trouble...

Re: ext4dev --> ext4

yep...
I did of course compile my own kernel, but that shouldn't make a difference...
As long as the devs remember to "Enable ext4dev compatibility" for klibc and other libs/applications that have ext4dev hardcoded in them... hmm

Re: ext4dev --> ext4

How does ext4 perform when compared to other common filesystems? I'm thinking of making the switch, but haven't been totally sold yet.

Re: ext4dev --> ext4

Well Ive been an avid user of XFS and Reiser3 in the past, and it blows both of them away speed wise. But the best thing is it has better data security than ext3, speed + secure = good. But as many will tell you its new so there could be bugs waiting to happen, Ive been using it since 2.6.28-rc1 and not had a single problem however.

Not really viable to do a PKGBUILD using mkinitcpio as the current klibc has no idea what ext4 is, it only knows ext4dev.

that is not a problem, as long as "Enable ext4dev compatibility" is ticked in the kernel-config... This option should be present untill 2.6.32 i think, so klibc has time enough to correct their issues...

Re: ext4dev --> ext4

Well yeah except when the kernel mounts an ext4 partition it strips the test_fs flag. Its just not worth the hassle if your root partition is on ext4. I tried a similar thing before giving up and just making a builtin kernel.
