Hi,
I just installed arch...it's my 5th time, first with this pc. It has an nvidia fx 5200. I installed the nvidia-173XX and the screen resolution is awful. no error messages. I used "nvidia-xconfig"
Switching to the "nv" driver, the resolution is right.
Any reason for this? Thanks.

Post your xorg.conf. You'll probably need to manually specify monitor's settings and resolutions.

i went in and inserted a 'dfaultdepth'\ and set the resolution under that mode....is there a reason why there isn't an nvidia splashscreen anymore? also. i have the dvi->vga adapter how can I enable the second monitor (twinview i guess?) i've only dual monitored with two cards and thus used xinerama

A simple xorg.conf works for me .
Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
BoardName "GeForce FX 5200"
Option "NoDDC"
EndSection
If you have nvidia-173xx-utils installed , you can try nvidia-settings to change the resolution .

thanks!
what about the dual display?

It should be in nvidia-settings again, somewhere.
EDIT:
The reason you no longer saw any splash screen is that it was disabled in your previous xorg.conf
