Lenovo ThinkPad SL500 issues

I just got a new laptop and now I'm having some issues while trying to set it up (64 bit arch, and I haven't tested everything yet).

First of all, screen brigtness settings are going crazy! For instance, if I press the brightness up key, the screen gets darker at first, then lighter, then a bit darker again, then a lot more lighter, then completely dark again... The same thing happens with the brightness down key and even with the slider in the GNOME managment settings. And it's never completely bright or dark, always somewhere in the middle.

Some of the special keys aren't recognized at all (like volume keys), some work just fine (like multimedia keys).

I can't shutdown or restart using GNOME's "Shut Down..." menu item. I have to log out to gdm and shutdown from there.

Is there any way to fix these things? I found nothing that worked.

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad SL500 issues

Does the command

xbacklight -set 100

bring it to full brightness?

If you type shutdown into the terminal, does the laptop shut off?  It could be a problem with gnome on your computer.

The volume keys may need to be set up - e.g. in ~/.Xmodmap

keycode 160 = XF86AudioMute
keycode 174 = XF86AudioLowerVolume
keycode 176 = XF86AudioRaiseVolume

Those keycodes may be off for your laptop, but they work on a T61.  See http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Multimedia_Keys for more info if that is the case.  http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_ge … ys_to_work has more info on other keys if you need them.

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad SL500 issues

xbacklight behaves a lot more predictably, though still wrong: it's reversed and not in full scale. The highest brightness is when I put a number close to 0. Then it shows 85 in 'cat /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCDD/brightness'. If I put 100 into the xbacklight, then I get 20, which I believe is as low as it gets.

[penguin@archpingu ~]$ xbacklight -set 0
[penguin@archpingu ~]$ cat /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCDD/brightness
levels: 100 90 85 80 75 70 65 60 55 50 45 40 35 30 25 20
current: 85
[penguin@archpingu ~]$ xbacklight -set 100
[penguin@archpingu ~]$ cat /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCDD/brightness
levels: 100 90 85 80 75 70 65 60 55 50 45 40 35 30 25 20
current: 20
[penguin@archpingu ~]$ xbacklight -set 50
[penguin@archpingu ~]$ cat /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCDD/brightness
levels: 100 90 85 80 75 70 65 60 55 50 45 40 35 30 25 20
current: 55

Sorry, I need to go now. I'll check your other advice in a few hours. Thanks for your help.

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad SL500 issues

The thing that it's using IdeaPad firmware is quite sad, actually. Why call it ThinkPad then? Now that I've realized this, I'm a bit dissapointed. Especially since it's a great quality laptop, but lacking a bit of software support.

However, acpi works pretty fine with me, I haven't had any issues yet. Battery monitor is correct, I can suspend, hibernate, laptop-mode is working fine...

I have checked honahursey's links for special keys. The first link doesn't help for some keys, and the second one is for the "real" thinkpads, I don't believe that it will work on this one. And actually, it's not really that important.

About those brightness keys, I figured out it's not really a big deal. The keys are just reversed, with a few "dark holes" in between the different "light zones". It's not perfect, but it's manageable.

That's it for now. I'll let you know if there will be any other problems, though I don't think so.
