Wanted: Working xorg.conf with Intel X3100 GMA965

Hello everyone!

After the most recent update of xorg-server (now 1.5.3-3), the Intel X3100 GMA 965 in my Thinkpad R61 only delivers very poor performance, e.g. Google-Earth runs very bumpy with maximum CPU-load. Just to rule out a google-earth bug, I installed FlightGear and some other games. Those are completely unplayable.

Could anyone who has a correctly configured X3100 GMA 965 please post his/her xorg.conf ? Or could anyone telle me where to find some kind of manual, in order to finally understand the settings made in xorg.conf?

Thank you very much in advance!!

Cheers,
Daniel

Re: Wanted: Working xorg.conf with Intel X3100 GMA965

The most recent version of xf86-video-intel uses GEM, which, however is due to come in kernel 2.6.28.
Long story short - if you want to use 3D apps with your intel card, use old xorg related packages (downgrade xorg-server, xf86-video-intel, libdrm, intel-dri)

Yes, new version uses GEM, but it can also fall back to classic buffer manager.
Poor performance in glxgears is caused by v-blank(or something like that) turn on in new drivers(and it actually is not poor performance).
With this X.org, I play Urban Terror so I guess 3D acceleration works:

I think you don't need an xorg.conf at all. On my girlfriends computer we tried without and everything works just fine. The only thing that is now in there is the touchpad driver.

Hi!

Thank you all for your responses.

Ok, I think I can do that, but I will treat it as a final option, because...

I think I will try your xorg.xonf and if it works satisfactory, I don't need to downgrade. Can't reach my Laptop now, but i will try it later.

I don't like my touchpad turned on all the time, because of the way I'm typing. I could disable it in my BIOS, but I also would like to be able to turn it on again without rebooting. So for now, I really need an xorg.conf.

Re: Wanted: Working xorg.conf with Intel X3100 GMA965

Performance is lower, ET became unplayable here... and the thing is, once we get GEM and UXA I'm not so sure it will outrun TTM/EXA immediately. So, no ET for me at least until February.

You need to install an RTFM interface.

Re: Wanted: Working xorg.conf with Intel X3100 GMA965

I#ve got the same card and the daily desktop-performance works best **without** any corg.conf.
Compiz Eyecandy is usable, exept rotate-cube or anything challenging. In fact i have about 25fps in compiz benchmark without doing anything...

X nearly crashes while cube-rotation...

So, final attempt in this thread:

Does anyone around here know WHEN the intel-driven Systems will be as usable as they were bfore the xorg-upgrade?

If the hole story will last until March I'll try Debian ;-) ^^

Re: Wanted: Working xorg.conf with Intel X3100 GMA965

I have GMA950 GPU on my laptop and everything works OK, if not better than older xorg. I use compiz and it works OK. CPU usage with the latest xorg update is lower when using compiz compared to older version. My xorg.conf is minimal:

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "X.org Configured"
    Screen 0 "Default Screen" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Files"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/Type1"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/TTF"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/Type1"
EndSection

Section "Module"
    Load "xtrap"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "LCD 1280x800"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "GMA950"
    Driver "intel"
    Option "DRI" "true"
    Option "AccelMethod" "exa"
    Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
    Option "ExaNoComposite" "false"
    Option "Monitor-LVDS" "LCD 1280x800"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
    Device "GMA950"
    Monitor "LCD 1280x800"
    DefaultDepth 24
EndSection

There are more things to remove from xorg.conf and it even works without it. This 4 options in Device section for intel driver might help:

    Option "DRI" "true"
    Option "AccelMethod" "exa"
    Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
    Option "ExaNoComposite" "false"

Re: Wanted: Working xorg.conf with Intel X3100 GMA965

Have a look at the Intel readme for the video driver, it talks about different options for compositing and GL setup.

SnapShot's last 4 lines are the crucial ones, I'd comment out all other GL-specific config except for them.

Compositing is enabled by default in the current xf86-intel driver. You need DRI, so load the module for it, and make sure it's got Mode 0666 under Section "DRI" (I've never bothered to look what this actually does, just everyone includes it).

You can change AccelMethod to either "xaa" (old) or "exa" (new), and when using EXA, people on many forums say different setups get different performance with ExaNoComposite "true" or "false", so try both. I think MigrationHeuristic is deprecated in the current driver version, you may be able to comment it out. I haven't looked into performance tweaking under XAA.

A few people on here also seem to be having issues with the latest Arch xorg and slowness, check the Desktop Environment forum, though it seems to be restricted to ATI binary drivers?

I have an X3100 in my laptop I can help with, though I've never bothered to look if it's a GMA 960 or 965. My work PC has a 945 I can mess around with too.

It should be for normal users(other than root) to have access to the graphic card.

It's GMA965.

Re: Wanted: Working xorg.conf with Intel X3100 GMA965

Hi everybody!

I've had the chance to try all of the suggested settings of the xorg.conf, but in every case, the xserver didn't even start anymore. sad I haven't had the time to see, which option exactly caused this behaviour (couldn't get any error output), or if there is a working setting, other than the suggested ones, but I will keep on trying and let you know as soon as there is any progress.

I also haven't tried to downgrade yet. I prefer to solve this issue with up-to-date software, even if that means waiting some time. hmm

Any further suggestions are very much appreciated, of course. big_smile

Cheers,
daniel

Have you examined your /var/log/Xorg.0.log after every trial run? If not, you should wink. Filter for EE, that's how Xorg tells you about errors.

Re: Wanted: Working xorg.conf with Intel X3100 GMA965

by adding

Section "Device"
    ...
    Option "DRI" "true"
EndSection

Section "DRI"
    Mode 0666
EndSection

i can get dri going. what does your /var/log/xorg.0.log say when you try to load DRI?

by changing these

Section "Device"
        Option "DRI" "true"
        Option "AccelMethod" "exa"
# Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
        Option "ExaNoComposite" "false"

i can change rendering method

here's the complete xorg.conf i'm using

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "X.org Configured"
    Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Module"
        Load "dri"

i've found i need to specify

Section "Device"
        ...
        Option "Monitor-LVDS" "Monitor0"
EndSection

so that edid properly detects the dpi of my laptop panel, and reports this back to things like openbox

you'll also noticed i've changed my "Screen" section to just be 1280x800x24bit

this is, however, on ubuntu with xserver-xorg-video-intel version 2.4.1 (hence no inputdevices, HAL works on ubuntu)
arch's package is extra/xf86-video-intel 2.4.3-1 but we're just testing X here so hopefully it shouldn't cause any massive differences?
let us know how that goes, i can install arch on the laptop if those changes don't work for you

The system is up to date and running smoothly otherwise. Any hints are much appreciated! big_smile

Re: Wanted: Working xorg.conf with Intel X3100 GMA965

Compositing should be enabled in the latest Intel driver anyway, commenting that bit out is fine. You can run xcompmgr and then start a vte-based terminal (gnome-terminal, or tilda or stjerm if you don't want to install gnome depends) transparency works properly to test basic compositing. Or Compiz, which I have no idea about wink

I found this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/252094 which reckons EXA kills performance in the latest intel driver. Comment number 4 has a working xorg.conf, which enables XAA and offers some performance tweaks. Try his Device section Options in your xorg.conf?

Just as I said... from another topic: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=a … q408&num=1
Ok, final versions might be better, but performance is so bad that they could barely start the game. Not even mentioning the other benchmarks.

Edit: remember, we are talking about hardware over two years old.

You need to install an RTFM interface.
