Seems that configuration I do to the Kicker panel, plasmoids, etc. is reverted to default every session. For instance, I added a Konsole icon to the Kicker but it fled on the next login; arranged plasmoids in a nice, convenient arrangement but all the plasmoids end up bunched up in the top left corner every login. I am locking the panel and it does no good.
Also seems like customizing activities messes up something in the gui configuration because I had to edit the plasmarc and plasma-appletsrc files to remove them.
Help is appreciated.

I had that too, a while back... could never find a solution... I eventually gave up on DEs altogether for a simple WM+apps.
Good luck!

what version of kde are you trying? and what repo did you use to install it?
do you have write permissions for ~/.kde4/?
also, i have had this problem if i don't properly shutdown via the menu. if you use the terminal or powerbutton to shut down it forgets all your changes.

I'm using 4.1.3 from kdemod, and permissions are fine. As to your last comment, that's a total pita. I usually use ctrl-alt-del or terminal to logout. Also this occurs when restarting X using ctrl-alt-backspace, which I use very very often since I have an awful habit of rapid, wanton text highlighting when I browse in Firefox and that somehow causes KDE to crash.
I guess I will play around with plasma-appletsrc until something satisfies me. Unfortunately I am favoring two folderview plasmoids but only a single containment for folderview is listed in the config file. Not a whiz at config file editing so I will fart around until something works...unless somebody else has a suggestion?

True, I get the same behavior with newest kdemod packages.

when i was frequently restarting X with ctl alt backspace, i just logged in once and intentionally made the desired changes then logged out and back in through the menu so it saved the changes. then i had a baseline to work with that would always be there when i crashed or spasticly rebooted

You are a smart man. I tried the shutdown method last nite and they're there in the right place today...will they stay there now?

You may try to use the command
kquitapp plasma && plasma
to save plasma configuration.
It's a bug planet!

Thank you...I will try this if something goes wrong. For now the plasmoids are staying put, I hope they stay there for good.
Also have a quick question that is slightly off topic: is there any mouse hotspot to display the plasma dashboard? I was not able to find one. Prefer that more to pressing Ctrl-F12.

I think that may come with kde 4.2... but i'm not sure.
don't forget to mark this thread as solved

KDE4.2 does have active sceen edges - but from what I've seen the dashboard is not an option. Shame really - after all, when you are talking dashboard you are talking mouse so it would make sense to be able to access it with it.
