Dvd/cd rw not recognized?

my dvd/cd rw is not working. I did some snooping in the hal wiki and follwed the suggestion to edit the fstab and I did and still nothing. The eject command does open though. Firstly it I have never used my cd/dvd writer it in gnome (although i installed with it ) I noticed it when i first tried to burn a cd.

What should i do?
