Evince Permissions

hi!  When I try to open a pdf file using evince, I just see a quick flash of evince and then nothing.   There isn't any output to the terminal which shows an error.
If I open evince using sudo, everything works fine which leads me to believe there is some sort of permissions problem?

I'm running gnome 2.24.2 on x86_64.  I believe the problem started today when I upgraded to gnome-session 2.24.2-2.

thanks,

Re: Evince Permissions

Does opening the PDF from the command line give you any errors?

Re: Evince Permissions

No errors, nothing but a quick flash of evince opening the document.

Here's what I see at the command line,

[campbell@cipher Unit4]$ evince Unit4_Written_Assignment_Campbell.pdf
[campbell@cipher Unit4]$

Re: Evince Permissions

Strange. I'm not using gnome-session, or Gnome for that matter, so I can't help much there. Just wild guess, would you please post the output of:

ls -al ~/.config/evince

Try removing/moving to a different place your ~/.config/evince directory?

That's worth a try. The permissions look fine. As well, I ran a diff on your accels and the one on my machine, and while different, I didn't notice anything.

Re: Evince Permissions

I moved  the ~/.config/evince directory to my desktop and restarted the computer.  Still, same thing happens.

Let me add that I can open evince itself without opening any document. (type evince at the command line).  If  I then try to open a pdf, evince just goes away.

Re: Evince Permissions

try rebuilding evince from abs and see if it still happens, then it might be worth a bug report.

Re: Evince Permissions

If you have it installed, it may be worth checking gconf-editor to see if anything is there.

------EDIT-------

It looks like I may be wrong about the configuration directory. It may be storing stuff in ~/.gnome2 instead of ~/.config.

Re: Evince Permissions

I did a rebuild of evince from the abs-----same thing happens.
Deleted stuff in ~./gnome2/evince/----- same thing happens.

In gconf, there is one key for evince called override_restrictions

Re: Evince Permissions

Does evince work with other formats besides PDF? Try opening a djvu or dvi document to see if it works normally. If it does, this could be a poppler problem and not an evince problem.

edit: Also, does this happen with all PDFs? Perhaps try another PDF.

Re: Evince Permissions

You're right.  I can open dvi files and even some pdfs.  I went and tried many different pdfs, there doesn't seem to be much a pattern to the ones which cannot be opened.    However, I can view any pdf in evince if I do sudo evince filename.pdf, that's why I thought it was a permissions problem.

I also can veiw any pdf using xpdf.

Re: Evince Permissions

Fixed************

I deleted all of the gnome config folders in my home directry: .gconf   .gconfd .gnome .gnome2

After that, it worked.  The problem must have been a config file some where other than an evince subfolder.   Now I have to go and reconfigure all of my desktop settings mad

Thanks to everyone for your input and advice.

I guess the good ole 'just delete everything and start over' fix is a requirement now for GNOME... Congrats on getting it fixed.

me too. After deleting ~./gnome2/evince one must not double click a file not opening before, you have to open it from evince. After that every thing is normal.(You have to do that just once on just one file)

Re: Evince Permissions

Sorry, the post is not entirely accurate: Removing the ~/.gnome2/evince makes evince works just for some files.
This problem is new - I used the same files short time ago with Evince.

Re: Evince Permissions

I rebuilded Evince from ABS, and everything see this http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 56#p470356.
And even removed ~./gnome2/evince, but still I get errors:

gnu_d ~/Desktop  $  evince OOFontTest.pdf

** (evince:3156): WARNING **: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
384dc664-00f5-0e1e-6315e749-0d1f0202 is dumped

But "sudo evince OOFontTest.pdf" works just fine.
Odd, root doesn't have ~./gnome2/evince.
