"Tricking" X with regard of fonts (using fonts aliases)

When you open a "Choose font" dialog, there's an option called "Sans" which actually is Bitstream Vera Sans. Is there a way to create more of these aliases?

I found this website: http://patriot.net/~scoile/fonts/fixing-3.html, but he's using an older version of X and I got a little bit confused. May I follow his instructions only changing the filename to /usr/share/fonts/TTF/fonts.alias ?
