I'm trying to use elisa (essentially gstreamer) to play a .mkv with what I suspect is AC3 audio (not totally sure). I'm only getting the surround tracks and no voices which i think are on a different channel. Video is a little laggy on startup but is otherwise fine. I'm using gstreamer 0.10. The file also plays fine in mplayer. Anyone have any advice? Thanks.

Use mkvinfo (mkvtoolnix package) to find out how many channels has your ac3 stream. If it's a 5.1 audio stream, then: if you have a 5.1 speaker system (and assuming you're using ALSA) use the surround51 output plugin, if you have a stereo speaker system you have to downmix the track to 2.0 (but this should be automatic, anyway...).
As you already guessed, in a 5.1 ac3 track usually voices are in the center channel.

So it appears that it is actually 5.1 Channel AAC audio. VLC also has this problem, I had to manually force it down to 2 channels and then it was fine. I played around a bit more and I just installed pulseaudio and it mixes it down to stereo fine. Don't know why alsa wasn't doing it automatically for AAC files.
