Re: Arch truly does rock...

1: I'd not be comfortable with using AUR PKGBUILDs (can't say I trust contributors to make a good job) -- so I'd rather just write my own. 2: So far have never needed non core/extra packages.

Re: Arch truly does rock...

or you could be helpful and adopt poorly written orphans, post comments to help improve packages, or really anything except "I dislike the AUR"

Hehe. Got it.

I guess I live dangerously. I have always felt that all my PC data is expendable and so have no such reservations.

yikes
You prefer writing your own PKGBUILD scripts from scratch?

Re: Arch truly does rock...

tdy: "Kid", don't play me that broken record. It's not like I'm starting threads, posting to mailing lists and trolling IRC channels about how "I dislike AUR". It's my personal opinion, I'm not telling anyone to work harder, I'm not telling anyone to lift one finger to make me "like AUR" -- so spare me the speeches.

Misfit138: Hehe, some people go sky diving.. others dive with sharks.. you use the AUR smile .

dsr: indeed, just like I dislike copy/pasta`ing various scripts and configuration files/pieces found on the internets (arch linux forums in particular). I'd rather get the general idea -> do some serious rtfm'ing -> implement a solution. What can I say, I've got openbox configuration files, theme files, xmonad configuration file, vimrcs, bashrcs, blah blah -- all written from scratch -- I don't mind doing the extra work.

Re: Arch truly does rock...

I can't seem to find the part where I said you trolled the IRC and mailing lists.  You can put whatever spin you want on it.  Either help out the AUR, offer ideas to improve it, or don't comment on it at all.

Whether you make comments like the following on a regular basis, on the IRC, in other threads, or to mailing lists has nothing to do with the fact that you said it here - now - in this thread, which is what I responded to:

I also write my own config files (after consulting lots of documentation), but I personally like to use the AUR whenever convenient.

Oh about Gentoo, I didn't realize that the main benefit of USE flags is for trimming dependencies, in which case a leaner system probably does save considerably more space than the amount that the Portage tree uses. I still think that benefit is more psychological than anything else, but I guess it comes down to which bothers the user more: compilation times or the loss of hard drive space. Like you, I prefer the Arch way despite the loss in dependency flexibility, but I see the other side better now.

Re: Arch truly does rock...

Um, can you not edit makepkg.conf to globally use custom flags just as easily?  I've never used Gentoo, so I don't even know how USE flags work.  I just know how to put in the build flags I want with ./configure, make, make DESTDIR=$PKGDIR install tongue

Re: Arch truly does rock...

USE flags are totally different to compiler options.

Re: Arch truly does rock...

Fair enough.  I see that they are some kind of abstraction that Gentoo uses to indicate to Portage which features or group of features to support or exclude.  That's pretty clever.
