I get the error "OAFIID:GNOME_Music_Applet" when I tried to add the music-applet to my gnome panel. Both 2.4.0 in community as 2.4.2. any ideas?

I've been getting a whole bunch of those errors for a wide variety of applets.
It's probably a dbus issue, are you using dbus ?
There are 2 ways to start dbus, one is to start your window manager (with exec dbus-launch openbox-session, for example) and the other is to start something like this with your window manager:
if which dbus-launch >/dev/null && test -z "$DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS"; then
eval `dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session`

Yes I do use dbus.

I don't know why, but the applets are flaky for me, I had to keep killing some applets and starting them again for them to work.
Sorry, can't help you further, I just got bored of it, and forgot all about trying to use gnome-panel.
