Invisible characters Xfce desktop icons and gVim

After I upgraded to the new X.org today, characters do not show in gVim and below the icons on my Xfce desktop. I use Xfce with Compiz. but the same happens with Xfwm as window manager.

When I log in (with startx, no login manager), the desktop is drawn, then for a few seconds there is text below the icons on my desktop (e.g. "Firefox"), but after a few seconds the text disappears. When I hit F5 on the desktop, to have it redrawn, the text briefly (about a tenth of a second) appears, but disappears immediately after that. When I start gVim, I see the area where the text is supposed to be, but the text itself is invisible. Only when I resize the window, the text becomes visible, but scrolling in the window makes it disappear again. It seems like both with the desktop icons and gVim, the background is drawn over the text instead of beneath the text.

Other applications seem to work fine. Does anyone have an idea of what's wrong?

Fixed by enabling subpixel hinting in Xfce's User Interface settings. See bug http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/12392.

I use Kde4 and have the same problem with gvim.
Turning on antialiasing fixed all issues except gvim.

Are there any other things to try?

Thank you very much. This worked for me too.
