Repos extra slow on last night and today?

Just wondering if I have a deeper problem or if everyone else is experiencing this.  Things are retrieving at like 16 KB/s  Yes, kilobytes.  Internet with browser seems to be running at 300 MB/s

I see the post on changing the mirror, but being somewhat new, I can't seem to figure out where the file "core" is to change the server.

Change your mirror in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist.  The first uncommented mirror is the defult one used. ftp.archlinux.org is throttled so don't use it.

Re: Repos extra slow on last night and today?

The docs you read must be out of date, the file you want to edit is /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

You can run rankmirrors mirrorlist > mirrorlist.ranked ; cp mirrorlist.ranked mirrorlist to automatically place the fastest mirrors at the top.

We have been having bandwidth issues caused by too many users accessing ftp.archlinux.org instead of a mirror, so we throttled the bandwidth again.

On that note, why do we even include the main server in the mirrorlist.  I know it's a small chance, but there may be users out there who are hitting that as their fastest mirror.

archlinux - please read this and this — twice — then ask questions.

Re: Repos extra slow on last night and today?

Excellent.  I commented out the first few up to the gatech one for USA.

I use the gatech one for Ubuntu as well.  Seems fastest.

Seems kind of odd to have them all 'enabled' but use only the first one by default.  I use FaunOS (live Arch distro) and use a front end for pacman called PacTrac and unlike Synaptic for Debian based distros, there is no option/graphical means of editing repos.

Why not put the arch mirror at the end of the list? It would be there as a last resort but it wouldn't be used because some other mirror would be selected first.

ftp.archlinux.org has been throttled very heavily again, by the way.

The suggestion box only accepts patches.

this question has been asked before and the answer remains the same.

ftp.archlinux.org is there for anyone who installs Arch linux the first time around. It is meant to be first in the list, that way there is always a RELIABLE server to install from and get updates from. As a new user you are not expected to know what mirror to use, some mirrors may even be out of date and cause issues to new users. Not what Arch needs.

That being said, as a Arch user, you are supposed to configure your machine the way you want too. That includes editing the mirrorlist to select YOUR prefered mirror.

Arch is pro-user oriented

Given how many people do not edit their mirrorlist, we are fairly sure no one particular mirror would be happy to be the first...

Re: Repos extra slow on last night and today?

True .... amazing how one can overlook something so simple as this .....
I do edit my mirrorlist, all mirrors are commented except the three mirrors in my country (two of them manually added) and the Arch mirror comes last (and thats why I said to put the Arch mirror last).

How about making a country selection mandatory during install? When doing an ftp install you select your country's mirror or the default (Arch mirror), if you need to select a country/mirror, then first would come the selected mirror and then Arch mirror as a fall back. I guess this isn't the Arch way but at least would prevent an higher than needed usage of the Arch mirror.

Curious.  I just edited this.  Installed Shaman and answered my own question.

It does everything I was missing with Synaptic in Ubuntu.

If that becomes a problem why not just provide the mirrorlist with everything commented out even in the ISOs?

This is good idea, because when updating mirrorlist you only uncomment mirrors you want to use instead of commenting others.
