Xfce4 login woes. [SOLVED]

For some time I've had no success getting Xfce4 to launch using my existing user. I've somehow borked things.

To simplify my troubleshooting, I'm presently logging in (or attempting to) by booting into runlevel 3 and typing startxfce4.

I've found that after creating a brand new user (for testing purposes only), I'm able to log in just fine using that user. However, my existing user still cannot log in. I even tried copying ~/.config/xfce4 and ~/.config/xfce4-session from my new user's directories to my existing user directories, but that didn't help.

So, somewhere in my config or other user-specific, Xfce4-related files for my existing user, there's something that keeps Xfce4 from starting.

I see this reference to an Xfce4-session segfault in my everything.log:

Jan 1 02:12:13 thinkpad xfce4-session[4925]: segfault at 0 ip 00007fc5cee288a2 sp 00007fffdaae5420 error 4 in libc-2.9.so[7fc5ced89000+14a000]

Does anybody see the error of my ways? I saw one "solution" on another distro's forum that involved backing up my existing user directories, creating a new user with the same name (which sounds unwise to me) and then restoring my original user's directories. But that seems like overkill, and it also doesn't really get at the source of the problem.

Thanks for any ideas.

Try also deleting ~/.cache/xfce4/

Thanks, Allan, but this didn't do the trick, either.

Re: Xfce4 login woes. [SOLVED]

what had you been doing on the computer the last time before you started getting this error? Had you been messing around with any of the permissions on the system? Update anything?

Re: Xfce4 login woes. [SOLVED]

O.K., I finally got it working right again. When I followed Allan's suggestion, I didn't simultaneously delete ~/.config/xfce4 and ~/.config/xfce4-session as well as ~/.cache/xfce4. I had deleted them before, but to get a really fresh start, I needed to delete all of them at once before restarting.

Then, once Xfce4 started launching again, I was actually able to restore my original ~/.config/xfce4 and ~/.config/xfce4-session files to get back my old configuration. And it still launches.

I'm not gonna try to figure that out, but it worked, anyway.

End of story, for now.

Thanks, all.
