I'm stumped.
[toad@myhost ~]$df -h|grep a7
/dev/sda7 2.0G 1.9G 34M 99% /.personalhda
So df tells me that sda7 is 2GB small.
parted confirms this but also tells a different story:
Warning: Partition 7 is 4211MB, but the file system is 2114MB.
And on checking gparted I am told that it is 3.92GB big, of which 3.79GB are used.
I don't know, you know, don't you know! Any ideas out there how I can get them all to agree?

I'd download a bootable partitioning utility, gparted do one
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php
and see what that tells you. All very strange...
P.S.
Is that the redoubtable CatWeasel I see as your avatar ?
Brings back many memories...

gparted spits out the same as parted (it being the programme gparted is a front end for) - 4GB
It all happened after shrinking, moving and generally juggling partitions about with gparted which ended with an error, after which the whole disk refused to be recognised. So I deleted the partition in question (sda7) using fdisk and put it in again. Since then I can access data and all the rest but this rather strange phenomenon occurs...
And yes, Catweazle!!! That is how I often feel in front of the box

SOLVED
I think the partition was 4GB big while the actual file system on it was only 2GB.
I ran a check using gparted and now I get
[toad@myhost ~]$sudo df -h|grep a7
/dev/sda7 3.9G 1.9G 1.9G 50% /.personalhda
Hurray! I can start backing up my personal stuff again without having to worry about size
