Totem traditionally uses xine as its backend, but there is a gstreamer backend as well. In Arch Linux, totem is now built with the xine dependency - how about making a version, say totem-gstreamer, that uses gstreamer. Like this, people who want a simple media player and already installed gnome (and thus gstreamer) don't have to install xine.

I seem to be the only one who thinks this is a good idea :-)
Anyway, I tried it with the new totem 0.99.17 which is supposed to have a much more stable gstreamer backend and the new gstreamer. unfortunatley I didn't manage to compile it yet.

Maybe you have some experience with GStreamer. Do you know how to get it to use esd or arts at its default sink? It keeps trying to use the dsp directly for me so I can't use that cool Rhythmbox player... Though xmms is nice too and works fine.

You can configure gstreamer default output through gconf.

Thanks, but while that sounded simple, I am lost. I got the gconf package installed but the only things it allows me to start are gconf-merge-tree and gconftool-2, both of which leave me clueless.

i did manage to compile everything, totem has a release error in his Makefile tomorrow a new release will be made.
i do not have an arch workstation atm so the testing of the new builds will happen tommorrow. as i said in the desktop part i will look into a possiblity to add totem-gstreamer to unstable tomorrow it isn't a really hard part to do

here it is: ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/unstable/totem- … pkg.tar.gz
it is pretty unstable. do not forget to submit bugs you find to the gnome bugs tracker. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/

Thanks. I think it was the error in the Makefile that prevented me from building it correctly. Anyway, I'll be happy to give it a try.

To edit it directly, you would use gconf-editor.
However the best way to change the output sink, is through "gstreamer-properties"

Cool, gstreamer-properties did exactly what I was looking for, thanks!
