Netcfg is wonderful!

I finally got fed up with networkmanager randomly disconnecting from my wireless network, and having to wait after logging in for gnome-network-manager to connect (and prompt me for my GNOME keyring password), so I decided to write my own script to handle wireless networking. After fighting with iwconfig and being unable to get it to behave in the slightest, I remembered netcfg. I looked at the wiki page, read it, and decided to try this wonderful-sounding thing, and wonderful it is
Shortly after installing it, I managed to connect to my wireless network, and fiddle with /etc/rc.local so that it connects in the background when I boot. All I could want now is a GTK program to manage my profiles, and create new profiles for detected networks which I don't have one for. I may make one.

Well done to the devs who worked on netcfg!

I also used netcfg2 before. But now I switched to Wicd, and it rocks! Nice tray app, few dependencies, and it just simply works!

I second netcfg's awesomness, it flawlessy connects to the nearest configured network when i boot up. its just simple and working.

PS: iwlist scan wlan0 + cp exampleprofile newprofile + netcfg newprofile + ping -c 3 www.google.com > *insert any trayapp here*

same here, wicd just works for me. i never could get netcfg2 to autoconnect on boot -- with or without quirks (intel4965), and with wicd i've never had it not connect.

Strange, you've had exactly the opposite experience to me with the same wireless driver. I've never managed to get Wicd to connect to anything but a wired network.

I started with Wicd, but moved to netcfg. Wicd stopped connecting to any network. Even after reboots, reinstalls(of wicd and Arch), I moved to netcfg. It works flawlessly with my iwl4965. I use netcfg-menu on bootup to connect to which network I want. I don't need any quirks. Sometimes I have to put scan=no at work since we have three APs with the same essid. I <3 netcfg.

Oh. I was just thinking about making an Netcfg applet for Awesome to monitor available wi-fi APs and connect to them, promting for WEP/WPA where necessary. Is that possible? That would be my first project for Awesome, but I just got inspired by an article dedicated to writing a Gmail pop-up notification using Lua and Naughty)
