35 gb / partition full (solved)

my 35 gb root partition is showing full, but I don't have much installed.  basic x plus xfce4 and some normal apps.  How can I find the offending files or directories?  I've never had this problem before.

"du" can show the sizes of directories, as can graphical tools like "filelight".
