[SOLVED]No sound. Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4

00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)
^ That's my sound card. I went on IRC and asked for help configuring it but nothing would work. I'm sorry I don't have more info than that. I've been AWOL for a while.

Re: [SOLVED]No sound. Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4

Is your system up to date?

What all have you tried to get sound working? Have you tried alsaconf with alsa-lib and alsa-utils?

We need more info.

Re: [SOLVED]No sound. Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4

Have you done all this?

0. make sure you add yourself to the audio group
1. insall alsa (pacman -S alsa-lib alsa-oss alsa-utils alsaplayer gstreamer0.10-alsa alsa-plugins )
2. run "alsaconf" to detect and configure your audio card.
3. at a console type: alsamixer -->  use it to adjust volume (to start make everything at lest 60%)
4. aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav  --> Test that sound works
5. issue "alsactl store"  --> Save Settings (as root)
6. add alsa to the daemons line (/etc/rc.conf)

If you did not, try and then let us know what the situation is and post any errors you may get.

ralvez: did all that and still couldn't get any sound.

bash-3.2$ aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono

no errors, either.

that reply would seem to indicate that Alsa *is* in fact working since that would be the response of the player.

Are you certain that there are no hardware problems, that all the connections to the speakers are OK? You can even use another audio equipment (like a small radio) to test and make sure your speakers work.

Also make sure your channels are not muted in alsa (alsaconf).

BTW, it could also be that your audio channel  (in your motherboard) is dead. How old is your system?

I'm on a Dell Dimension 2400. Its a few years old. I don't think that its a hardware problem because I just switched from Ubuntu and with Ubuntu sound worked perfectly.

If "lsmod | grep pcsp" shows anything (e.g. snd_pcsp), try blacklisting the module(s).

Re: [SOLVED]No sound. Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4

bash-3.2$ lsmod | grep pcsp
snd_pcsp 11040 0
snd_pcm 69636 4 snd_pcsp,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss
snd 50724 10 snd_pcsp,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mixer_oss

why does it say bash-3.2$ as opposed to user@box$ or something like that?

All of these modules would be blacklisted? Seems like a lot.

Re: [SOLVED]No sound. Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4

Still can't get any sound.
Tried aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav and got the same result as last time. Went to youtube and couldn't hear anything either. Checked alsamixer and I had everything to 100%. Like I said earlier, sound worked perfectly in Ubuntu. There must be some type of auotmagic configuration that it does.

Re: [SOLVED]No sound. Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4

Well we don't have the same card, but you can try toggling "Audio Analog/Digital Output Jack" in alsamixer (from here).  Seems like everyone in that thread has an Audigy 2 ZS, but maybe it also affects your card.  If that doesn't help, I'm out of ideas.

Re: [SOLVED]No sound. Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4

That did the trick. Thanks all!

Edit: I went into alsamixer and shut off things I didn't need. External amplifier, Line Jack, etc. etc.

I'm also having this issue on intel HD audio controller.

No sound after upgrade.

I opened alsamixer, I see no "Audio Analog/Digital Output Jack".

How exactly does one change this?

Thanx!

Re: [SOLVED]No sound. Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4

Did changing the MODULES array fix your problem? If so, post a note to that effect and mark this thread '[Solved]' (by editing your O/P). Help the next poor soul in your boots.

It not, post THAT! Also, ralvez makes an excellent point (two, actually):
(A) I had a pair of speakers go bad on me DURING a(n Arch) Linux install. Fought it for 2 weeks because, "...I KNEW they were working." Swapped them out with a $5 pair from the closet in desperation. Problem solved...
(B) from the output you've shared, I agree; it appears ALSA IS 'working'. Just not for you...

Not trying to insult your intelligence, believe me; just trying to cover as many bases as possible here:

You do have checked to insure the speaker cable(s) are plugged into the right port(s), right? I've pulled that one before, also (no pun intended...).

And some really sneaky cards have  a volume thumbwheel ON THE CARD BACK, next to the speaker ports. I was fooling around with a card just above the sound card once, and apparently merely brushed my hand against to thumbwheel. Sound mysteriously disappeared. I've had my battles with Linux/sound/ME (as in MYSELF - NOT an old 'product' by M$...).

Don't worry about Blacklisting snd-pcsp. It only drives the PC speaker (beep! beep! beep! beep!).

# sed s/beep!/FingerNailScratchingChalkBoard/     #    smile

why does it say bash-3.2$ as opposed to user@box$ or something like that?

Have you, as root, from the /root directory, done a 'cp /etc/skel/* .' ?  When I forget to, that's ALWAYS what reminds me to do it.  smile The Arch installer doesn't copy these to /root during install, and, of course, root is ALREADY set up as a user, so useradd doesn't have a chance to do it for you. It seems to take care of your GROUP entries, but it doesn't copy the skel files. You really only need the .bash* files; since you really shouldn't EVER run X as root, you don't need .xinitrc.

RE: your modules. I installed Arch64 alongside Arch32 a few months back (my sound chip at the time was a RealTech (RealTec? Realtek?)). I had the same problem - sound worked fine in Arch32 but nada in Arch64.

In /etc/rc.conf, I replaced the line:
MODULES (mii via-rhine ac97_bus sound_module after_sound_module after_sound_module after_sound_module after_sound_module)

with

MODULES ()
#MODULES (mii via-rhine ac97_bus sound_module after_sound_module after_sound_module after_sound_module after_sound_module)

and everything worked beautifully. EVERYTHING. In fact, even today, ALL the (small number of) entries I have in MODULES, begin with '!'  !!! Module autoloading is pretty robust today (in Arch, anyway).

YOU likely need at least the loop and fuse modules; you know more about that than I. But I also had 2 network drivers at the beginning of the MODULES array, and they load fine all by themselves. YMMV. And sorry for the tome; I tend to be <s>thorough</> massively verbose.

I had this problem today after an update. Audigy 2 ZS card.

I reran alsaconf as root and everything is fine now. I did that before finding this thread so I don't know if that toggled the optical for me, but everything is fine and dandy now.

Re: [SOLVED]No sound. Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4

@android: Are you running alsamixer in a terminal or GUI?

For console: Make sure you're in the appropriate view mode (tab until you get to "All" or "Playback" mode).  Then look carefully at the full "Item" names ("Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack" for my card, probably slightly different for yours).

For GUI: I don't know what others are like, but my volume mixer has a "Show Switches" arrow at the bottom that expands to show those options.  It also shows them in File->Options.

@xenocoder: Same here, I posted in that thread that alsaconf fixed it for me.  Judging by all the other responses in there, I'm pretty sure alsaconf automatically toggled that option.

and grndrush, you might have noticed by now, but he already fixed the issue and marked the thread as solved before you posted wink

Re: [SOLVED]No sound. Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4

OK, none of that stuff helped me 8-(

I just shut down and deleted alsa from DAEMONS, started the JACK server, and selected the jack output plugin in xmms, now audio is working!!!

ALSA obviously has some issues in the current repository state, at least for x86_64.

Thanks for everyones enthusiastic responses!

I had tried rerunning alsaconf, and the suggestions regarding checking the cables are well founded. I actually had a hickup getting audio out of this machine after the inital install. Turned out the audio came out of the front panel speaker jack, not the rear panel like it has on every other machine I've ever installed linux on.

Go figure.

So, I wouldn't really call my issue SOLVED as much as AVOIDED, but at least I have audio now (Pete Namlook's Russian Spring, very nice).

Some kind of vetted package stable branch would really be a big benefit for arch. I know it's been yakked about a thousand times, but man I hate these little debug sessions after updates.

I personally like the idea of some functionality on top of pacman that allows rolling back to pre-updated versions enmass.

Anyway, Thanks Again! and Happy New Year!!!

OK, now I'm moving on to finding why thunderbird 2.0.0.18 won't let me compose an email.

Oh yea, gotta love that "roiling release"...

EDIT: As long as I'm _way_ OT here:
nautilus is now a seperate package that apparently contains the themes
my t-bird was broken without it
        hmm...

I don't think the modules had anything to do with it. I'm going to revert my modules array back to the way that it was initially.

@android: what worked for me was shutting off certain things in alsamixer. I shut off Line Jack Sense and Headphone Jack Sense. That is what did the trick.

Thank you SO MUCH for this critically important piece of info, tdy.

I would think that, before making an arrogant statement AS A N00BIE (WELCOME to Arch, tdy) someone might look for 5 seconds at the bigger picture:

1. My post was rather long.
2. HOPEFULLY, it's apparent I put a bit of thought into it - it wasn't a 5-minute effort.
3. It posted 30 minutes after the O/P's post.

Did the POSSIBILITY that I STARTED that post BEFORE the O/P posted he'd solved the problem ever occur to you? I noticed 5 seconds after I posted that he'd posted that he'd solved his problem - but it DOES appear he marked the thread "solved" as I suggested.  smile smile smile

Again, tdy, WELCOME TO ARCH.

I would think that you might have noticed the wink that you even quoted.  All lighthearted comments can appear arrogant if you take them out of context, which is why people generally attach winks and laughs to them.. *shrug*

Re: [SOLVED]No sound. Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4

Good Morning Archers
(perhaps that monicker refers to the routine flying barbs 8-)

All winks, nods and flames aside, I would not consider this issue SOLVED
(or SLOVED as is perfered by the lysdexic among us)

absolutezero1287, running intel sound hardware, reports the issue fixed by the setting of various switches in the mixer. This also seems to correct the issue for the Audigy sound hardware users.

The system affected here is running newer intel sound hardware (from lspci):
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)

In alsamixer this sound controller displays none of the Analog/Digital, Line Jack Sense and Headphone Jack Sense switches reported by absolutezero1287.

Previous recent upgrades also led to termination of sound function, however in all previous cases rerunning alsaconf as root would fix the problem.

This time nothing seems to get raw alsa working.

I think the ability of JACK to provide sound from xmms confirms the h/w is all still good, and in fact covers 99.5% of this machine's sound requirements, but alsa is still broken.

I'm still not clear on how alsa fits in with jack in the whole sound heirarchy. They are not exclusive and seem to work together somehow.

That's the morning minutes from southern california.

Hasta Pronto...
